L F/G/ vw xa a n 5M5; Z QZW Patented Mar. 28 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE William Reid McConkie, Irvine, Ayrshire,
Scotl and Application April 16, 1938, Serial No. 202,371 In Great Britain June 30, 1937 1 Claim.
The subject of this invention is a device for use in waving or curling hair.
A device according to the invention comprises, essentially, a pair of tongs of which each distal limb carries an elongated arcuate heating iron so contrived that, when the limbs are brought together, the arcuate members conjointly form a tubular heating element adapted completely to surround the coil of hair to be waved or curled. Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing are respectively elevations at right angles to each other of a heating device according to the invention.
As illustrated, the device incorporates tongs 15 which present a pair of distal limbs 2, 3, and a pair of proximal limbs 4, 5, the limbs being pivoted together at l. The limbs 4, 5 are provided With suitable handles 6. Each distal limb carries an elongated heating iron 1 of arcuate sec- 20 tion. The heating irons l are complemental to one another and conjointly form a tubular heating element. I
The irons I may be disposed at right angles to the associated limbs of the tongs. If desired, the 25 irons may be inclined relatively to such limbs.
Conveniently, each iron 1 is provided with a laterally extending screw-threaded pin 8 which car ries a wing-nut 9 whereby the inclination of the heating element relativelyto the limbs may be 30 varied and the element held at any position of adjustment.
The tubular heating element may be heated over a flame, say, a gas flame.
The hair to be waved or curled is wound on a tubular mandrel indicated diagrammatically at IU, Fig. 1. Over the wound hair there is slipped 5 a fabric sachet l l impregnated with waving solution or reagent, a protective insulating washer or Washers l2 being interposed between the end of the element and the roots of the hair l3 so as to protect the scalp from injury by the hot element. 10
The sachet sleeving the hair wound on the mandrel is inserted between the complemental heating irons l which are brought together by closure of the handles 6, so as to apply heat tothe sachet and thereby liberate steam or chemical vapour which permeates the hair, the gases escaping from the open end of the tubular mandrel.
I claim:
A portable self-contained and manually operable device for use in waving or curling hair comprising a pair of tongs having distal and proximal limbs, an elongated heating iron comprising complementary elements each of arcuate internal section and each carried by a distal limb, a screwthreaded pin projecting laterally from each distal limb and engaging one of said elements, said elements being each angularly adjustable on its respective pin, and a wing nut applied to each pin and adapted to lock the respective element in its position of angular adjustment.
