Patented Nov. 3, 1931 o en ' aosarir ILQ'G'AIYRE, or PATERSON, NEW JERSEY f- HAIR' wAvI NG nrrnnaros Application med October 8, i930; I Serial K614 87396.
This invention relates to hair waving equipment and more particularly to devices for producing so-called permanent 'wav'es n humanhair. a I
The pri" ary object/of the invention iisfto provide aneflicient hair waving or curling device by which the hair may be permanent- 1y curled. or lwaved Without danger to the hair or scalp of the subject,fthe devicebem ing so constructed, arranged and adapted'to operate that it may be 'convenientlyfem ployed" with standardjcroquinole machines.
'.-Another object of the invention is'to provide an apparatus. of the above character IlII which the flannel pad'susually em 'loyedfor protecting the head are omitted, t us inater' rially reducing the cost of producing'fa per ma'nent wave, l
Still another object 'ofthe invention 'is to' construct the permanent waving device so cal-heating'units of standard form;
Yet another object offithe' in'vention i's to provide a permanent';'hair"waving device which will enablethe'o'perator to soakthe hair considerably more than has been pos-f sible with devicesior systems heretofore 7 use, the steam being concentrated'within the "r device and'permitted to escape very slowly,
thus enabling thedevice to produce a vapor permanent natural wave in which the waves will bejsoft and deep, whil'ealso eliminating the. danger of 'steam burns on? the scalp of the subject.
Other objects are v to: provide an improved typefof hair strand clamp and to simplify Y andiinprove the constructiodof the clamp,
andlsteaining apparatus, whereby the num-f ber of parts required will be materially re? duced and the employment of the device will be materially simplified due to the facility with which the'same may be 'applied to the,
Jing adapted to insulate thefsteanhcprling "Another object of the invention. is men:
A further object of the'invention is to enable the .hairstra'nds to be Wound'laterally upon the curling members so that the curling or waving is produced upon the strand to a pointclose tothe scalp, thereby; producing 55 a more thorough and complete wave formation, and enhancing the effect of the permanent wave. I A'still further object is to'enable the steam to'bej confined in the curling or steam chain- 60 her, the side portion through which the base of the strand extends being sealed against escape of steam in proximity to the scalp, an orifice or the like being provided to permit exhaust-steam to escape in an upward 05 orfo'utward'direction away from the scalp, so that thejsubject may not be rendered un- 'c'o 'ni'ortableduring the steaming operation.
Other objectsandadvantages of the invention" will be hereinafter specifically pointed 70 out, o'r will become apparent, as'the specification proceeds;
With'the above indicated objects in View, the invention resides in certain novel constructions and combinations, and arrange- 7 ment er parts, clearly described 'in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which latter ig. 5 is a detail view of one end of the hair'strand clamp; and Y I Fig. is a transverse section through the hair strand clamp, substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. s p
In the'form ofmy present device as shown in the accompanying drawings, the lock or strand of'hair 10 is separated and securely held in the form of aflat band within a clamp 11 which includesa pair of elongated 0 berslisjsuch'thatj'when the clamp is open the.- locking ends of the members 12 and. 135 g members 12 and 13 pivotally connected to each other atone end, as seen at 14.
The clamp members 12 and 13 in this in; stance are preferably formed of relatively light but durable material, such as thin-bars of aluminum. The member 1'2'is preferably doubled upon itself in flat U-shape; and the member 1'3 has an ilpstandiligleg 15 which is received between the arms of the U-s hape'd member 12 to provide a pivot 16 for theftwo' clamp members. I Means are provided to clamp the members 12 and 13 together; and forF'sthis' purpose' the 'end of the membe-r 12 opposite to the hinge pivotv 16 has a flatspring latch member 17 secured betweenthe arms of the U of said member 12. This latch :member .Il'has anoifset portion 1 8icarr'ying a hook 191 which latter is adapted to engage the lower edge of the member 1 3' when the clamping members are secured together.-
' withcoverings20"and521 respectively which to beopened a slight pressure upontheplurality of layers of flannel or otlierm-ate- Resilient meansare-provided. to secure a tight; locking engagement between the clamping, members 12 and. 1,3. In instance the members 12 and 13 are provided ay desirably be of rubber.
Means are also provided to protect the scalp ofl'the 'subjectfduring the steaming operation; 1' and for this purpose one side of, each ofthe clamping membershas a pad 22 and" 23, respectively,l'suitablySecured to the resilientcoverings20 and 21 ,a sbybeing vulcanized" thereto or, by" stitching,,.or "otherivisesx The pads 22 and 23 preferably extend the am length of the 'clamping..'members;
and these "pads maybe formed of one or a.
rial low heat conductivity. I
' "The v relation between -the"'cla mping -mem slightlyofiset from each'other in a vertical plane; When the hair strandis clamped in placethe members12 and 13 are -moved. into parallelrelationship as the hookl 19"is' ap-' plled to the member 13. To form the curls 0r WELVGS in the hair preliminary to the steamingoperation, I,p1ro-' causesthe hook 19 :0 be released as the lockf mg endsg'of' the members spring} away from eachother to a, 'positionislightly. out "of parvide in this inst ance,a hollow tubular curling rod 24 havingan' elongated clamp ;25 pivotedthereto.
One end of the "curling .rod. 24 is 1 preferably closed, as seenat 26ian d the opposite end is open as indicatedat 2.7, the open.-
The tubular curling rod 24 with its Wound hair strand is brought relatively close to the hair strand. clamp 11. A cylindrical housing 29, having a closed end 30, an open end 31 and a slot 32 extending tothe open end 31; is their placed .overwthef curling; rod, the
portion ofthe hair strand 10 between the clampand the curling rod beingreceived -i1rtl1e slot. -32.: The end of the tubular curling rod 24 adjacent to the plug 28 is provided with a gasket 33 which aifords a tight fit forthe curling rod within the cylindrical An elongated clamping member 35L, having a lining '35; in this instance of Jrnbber is provided for closing the: slot 31'. This clamping member 34 has a ring portion 36 integral' with one of its-ends; and this ring per tionis. adapted to surround one endof the cylindrical l10l1SlDgI29, While; I the opposite end of the. clamping member. 34" is secured in place by means of a loose ring 37.
, Inthe; operation 'o f the device' the hair strand is first thoroughly soaked with .water or other suitable. liquid solution; and the parts" of the device arethen-assembledin the inamier alreadydescrlbed. A suitable portable. electric heatingdevice '38 indicated sov used, :theplug28j isl'in; its place, closing the opening..27' of the curlingrod'. A; small orifice. 4O provided in the wall of the cylindrical housing 29,. so that. the steam 7 may escape only. very slowly. The l a r s thus heated. to a point of gentle steaming without anydry heat coming in contact withthe hail: Then it is desired to employ live steam.
