Description

J. R. ELLIOTT. Pence.
No. 213.882. Patented April 1,1879
WITNESSES I JV VEJV TOR 4 W z' 0% MW By Mm .4 TTORW'E Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES R. ELLIOTT, OF BEEBE STATION, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO F. P. LAWS, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,882, dated April 1, 1879 application filed January 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES R. ELLIOTT, of Beebe Station, in the county of White, and in the State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an inclined rail fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my fence. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Each fence-post is composed of two bars, A A, crossing each other and secured together at a, and a short cross-bar, B, connects said bars below the point of crossing. In the crotch of the bars A A are placed two parallel bars, 0 0, connected at their lower end by a cross-piece, b, and between these parallel bars are inserted the ends of the rails D D from two adjacent panels. A brace, F, is placed under the crotch of the bars A A, and fast ened to the cross-bar B and to the parallel bars 0 O, for holding the posts and panels together and at any angle desired.
I thus form an inclined fence which is strong and durable, and is not liable to be knocked over either by wind or by animals. At the same time plowing can be done close up to the fence, thus making a saving in land.
In addition to the rails D, riders H are placed at the top in the angles, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the crossed bars A A, connecting-bar B, inclined parallel bars 0 O, rails D, and brace F, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of November, 1878.
JAMES RUSSEL ELLIOTT.
