UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM STACY, OF COTTAGE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,337, dated October 17, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STACY, of
Cottage, Hardin county and State of Iowa,
have invented a new and Improved Fence, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line X X, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved fence, simple in construction, easily set up, taken down, and moved from place to place, and which shall be firm and stable, not being liable to be blown down or pushed over.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Each panel of the fence is formed of two, three, four, or more horizontal boards, having a cross-bar, B, attached to each side of each end, and a cross-bar, B, attached to their middle parts. To one end of each panel A, just below the top horizontal board and between the crossbars B, is secured an arm or bar, 0, which projects to enter the end of the adjacent panel, where it is secured in place by a pin, 0, which passes through the said arm at the inner edge of the end crossbars of the said adjacent panel. The fence is held erect by the brace formed of the two inclined bars E, which cross each other near their upper ends, and the lower parts of which are connected by a cross-bar, F.
The inclined bars E are made of such a length that the angle between their upper ends may 0. The lower parts of the panels are kept in place by a key, D, which is slipped between the end cross-bars B of the adjacent ends of the panels along the upper edge of the lowest horizontal board,-and which passes through a notch in the middle part of the cross-bar F of the brace.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the panel, having perforated projecting coupler O, and the panel having cleats b, of the support E, constructed as described, the pin 0 and the wedge D, as and for the purpose specified.
