Description

' Sept. 20, 1938. J. SCHERFER COMBINATION UNDER GARMENT Filed Sept. 30, 1936 Ewe; L504 @005 Joke/fix,
Patented Sept. 20,-1938 I UNITED STATES communes Jacob Schcrfer, Chicago, Ill. Application September 30, 1938, Serial No. 103,400
8 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in ladies garments, and particularly to a combined girdle and pan garment having an upper portion in the form of portion in the form of pants or briefs smoothly joined together so as not to cause a bulge in the outer garments, as is the case when two separate l0 garments are worn. I
' Another object relates to the method of Joining the two portions of the garment so that they will cooperate with each other, the portion forming the girdle being of elastic material that will stretch in all directions, and the pants portion being of relatively inelastic material.
Another object relates to the method 01' holding the girdle portion of the garment from being longitudinally displaced or wrinkled andlto hold it smoothly in place by means of an anchoring thigh band portion of the pants.
Other objects relate to various features of construction and arrangement which will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification and drawing, whereinz' Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the garment, and,
Figure 2 is a section thereof on the line |-I.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the garment.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the garment in its stretched and applied position.
Figure 5 is a front away showing a variation in the construction 50 tion of the hips.
The pants portion II is preferably abbreviated and-formed of i'elatively sheer material, and has leg pieces or thigh engaging portions' H, which are preferably formed of ribbed material designed a to yield circumferentially to snugly engage the curved portion or dip I 2 loosely knit elastic material thigh, as shown in Figure 4. The crotch portion I5 is in the form of an inverted V shaped gusset, and preferably is formed of a double thickness of material.
As the girdle portion is elastic and the pants 5 portion is relatively inelastic, provision is made at their point' of jointure so that they will expand together. This is done by making the linear measurement of the pants portion of a pre-- determined size and shirring it as at it at its margin where it is stitched to the elastic portion at H, so that they will both lie smooth and flat a when expanded and worn, as shown in Figure 4.
In the use of girdles of the type shown that do not have stays, it is necessary to provide a means 15 to hold the girdle stretched longitudinally, as otherwise it will curl up or buckle and not provide proper support, and also cause irregularities in the outer garments. To offset this, depending garters are usually. attached to the girdle to be fastened to stockings. wear and tear on the stockings, and the method is not adapted to the wearing of short length stockings. Sometimes crotch pieces are provided, but this expedient causes too great tension at some portions and not enough at others. By the 25 construction herein set forth the use of depending garters has been eliminated and a means to hold the girdle uniformly stretched is provided. Furthermore, the lines of stitching i8 extending from the thigh pieces H to the center of the 30 form a reinforcement and a divided line of tension to keep the girdle stretched over the abdomen without causing undue strain on the gusset IS. The seat of the pants may be formed of one piece as i9, and ,secured to the front portion by the side lines of stitching 20, so as to further aid in holding the sides of the girdle stretched over the hips.
In the use of tubular elastic girdles it is often 40 dimcult to remove the garment after wearing it for some time. However, in my construction the In the optional form in Figure 5 the elastic over the front of the This causes great 20 Although I have-shown and described certain features 0! my improvements for the purpose of illustration, it will be apparent to one skilled m the art that various changes may be made in" the details and cm of construction without departing from the spirit 0! the invention, and therefore, I do notwish to be restricted thereto except as so limited by the appended claims.
What I claim is.
1. In an article of the class described, a girdle portion formed of relatively heavy elastic material and a pants portion formed oi relatively light weight material in comparison therewith, the said portions being cooperatively joined; to each other to form a unitary, garment, the'said pants portion to hold the said girdle portion anchored in stretched constricting relation, and inverted ,V- shaped lines of stitching on said pants portion extendingfrom said leg bands to the bottom edse of said girdle portion to' assist in holdingsaid girdle portion stretched downwardly over the abdomen oi the wearer. v I
2. An undergarment of the class described comprising an endless tubular girdle portion of relatively heavy elastic material and a pants portion of relatively light weight material in comparison therewith; the said pants-portion being a. pants portion of having constricting leg bandsadapted to encircle the thigh of the wearer'and .body oi the wearer,
- ct stitching on said pants portion extending from of said girdle portion adapted to cooperate with said. leg, bands to tended downwardly over of the wearer. I
3; An undergarment of the class described comprising an abdominal constricting portion formed of relatively heavy elastic material and relatively light weight material in comparison therewith, the said relatively the abdomen and hips heavy elastic material being adapted to extend over the abdomen of the wearer, and the said relatively light weight the bottom of said undergarment to the top thereof at its back portion, the said pants por-'- tion having constricting leg bands adapted to hold said portion of terial in longitudinally stretched relation on. the and inverted V-shaped lines said leg bands to the bottom edse of said ab- .dominal constricting portion to assist in holding it downwardly extended. g
