This invention relates to writing instruments and more particularly to a calendar attachment therefor.v
An object of the present invention is to pro- 1 5; vide for application either to a mechanical pencil, fountain pen, or analogous writing instru ment what may be termed a perpetual calendar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a writing instrument such as a fountain 51 pen, pencil, or analogous instrument with a calendar, and wherein the instrument and calendar forming the part thereof is characterized by simplicity of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and facility of operation. The invention together with its objects and advantages will be bestunderstood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:--

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals and more particularly to Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, it will be seen that 5 indicates generally a fountain pen the barrel of which is indicated by the reference numeral 6.
In accordance with this form of the invention the barrel 6 at the end thereof remote from the point or nib of the pen is hollowed out and opened at one end to receive a calendar assembly indicated generally by the reference numeral i.
In this form of the invention the calendar assembly '7 comprises, in the present instance, three nested calendar cylinders ll formed of paper or other suitable material opened at one end and substantially closed at the opposite end, and at said closed end provided with openings 9.
Each calendar cylinder 8 has arranged on its periphery as suggested clearly in Figure 4 calendar indicia If], the calendar indicia Ill on each cylinder being suflicient for four (4) months of the year. Also to readily identify the calendar cylinders 8 and the legendary matter carried thereby each cylinder 8 at the closed end thereof has printed or otherwise formed thereon the names of the four months constituting the calendar indicia it on the-periphery of the cylinder .as will be clear from a study of Figures 4 and 5.
Further the calendar assemblyincludes a cap ll adapted to be sleeved onto the open end portion of the nested calendar cylinders 8, and this cap H is formed on one end of a rod or bolt [2 that extends axially through the cylinders and throughthe openings 9. Threaded on the free end of the rod or bolt I2 is a nut [3 which cooperates with the cap II for securing the calendar cylinders and cap in assembled relation.
As shown in Figure 2 the calendar assembly 1 is placed within the free end of the barel 5 with the cap H in abutting engagement with the end of the cylinder. At said end the barrel or cylinder 6 is provided with an elongated sight window 14 through which a part of the indicia I0 is exposed, the indicium It being so arranged that there will be exposed through the window M the name of the month and the day dates of a complete week of the calendar month. As shown in Figure 1 there may be suitably provided on the barrel 6 along one edge of the sight opening l4 the first letter of each of the days of the week.
It will be apparent that in operation the knob H is turned for bringing the proper longitudinal row of indicia opposite the window M at the proper intervals, and it will of course be understood that at the completion of the fourth month the outermost calendar cylinder 8 will be removed so that the next adjacent calendar cylinder 8 is brought into use.
In Figures 8 to 11 inclusive is illustrated the application of the invention to a mechanical pencil indicated by the reference numeral [5. In this form of the invention two calendar cylinders' l6, I'l, identical in construction, are provided and each is equipped on its periphery with calendar indicia I 8 germane to six months of the year so that after one cylinder has been used for the six months designated thereon the other cylinder is brought into use.
Each of the calendar cylinders I6, I! is internally threaded at its respective oppositeends as at It for the threaded reception of a knob 20.
In actual practice both cylinders are arranged in longitudinal alignment within the barrel of the pencil l5 with the cylinder having thereon the indicia germane to the last six months of the year arranged in the forepart of the barrel about the lead feeding assembly 2| while the other cylinder, for example, the cylinder l1 having thereon the calendar indicia for the first six months of the year is placed within the outermost end of the barrel IS with the knob 20 threaded into one end of the cylinder I! and having abutting engagement with the adjacent end of the barrel of the pencil as shown in Figure 8, At said end the barrel I6 is provided, as in the case of the fountain pen, with a sight window 22 along one side of which are arranged the first letters of each of the seven days of the week;
As suggested in Figure 10 the calendar months on the cylinders l6, I! are arranged in groups of three one group being at one end of the cylinder and the other group at the opposite end. Thus it will be apparent that after the expiration of the last day of the month of one group of months the cylinder being used is withdrawn from the barrel of the pencil, reversed, the knob 20 threaded into the reverse end of the cylinder and the cylinder replaced within the barrel to be used for calendar purposes during the next succeeding three months.
As shown in Figure 9 the cylinders l6 and I! are hollow'to accommodate the reserve lead 23. As shown in Figure 8 the lead 23 is retained within the cylinder being used through the instrumentality of the head end of the lead feeding screw 2|.
In Figures 12 to 14 there is shown a third form of the invention which may be used either with the fountain pen 5 or the pencil l5 and in this form of the invention the calendar cylinders indicated by the reference numerals 24 are in the form of cylinders each of a diameter to carry on the periphery thereof indicia germane to three calendar months there being four of such cylinders 24. Cylinders 24 are longitudinally split as shown in Figure 14 and indicated at 25 and are nested together as shown for disposition within the barrel of the pencil or fountain pen as the case may be.
For the cylinders 24 there is provided a core member 26 which consists of a knob 21 to which are secured one end of a plurality of relatively spaced spring fingers 28 which are also secured at the end thereof remote from the knob 21 to a head plate 29. The cylinders 24 are sleeved onto the core 26 to be held in expanded condition through the medium of the retaining fingers 28 and between the knob 21 and the head plate 29, and when the cylinders and core are assembled the assembly may be placed within the end of the barrel of the pencil or fountain pen, as the case may be, to be used in substantially the same manner as the calendar cylinders constituting the first and second forms of the invention herein described in detail.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a Writing instrurnentality including a barrel open at one end and provided at said one end with an elongated sight window, a calendar unit rotatably fitted within said end of the. barrel and including a cylindrical member having calendar indicia thereon to be exposed through the sight window, said calendar indicia consisting of calendar months arranged in two laterally spaced groups one of which is adapted to be exposed through the sight window in one position of the member and the other group being adapted to be disposed therethrough when the position of the member is reversed end for end and a knob I LEO LOWY.
