Description
Dec. 4, 1951 Fi-led Sept. 25, 1949,
Inventor JOHN MILLING TON Atlorney Patented Dec. 4, 1951 I ohni The present invention relates to pencil calendars and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a pencil calendar comprising an elongated hollow cylindrical member to one end of which is inserted a wooden pencil and into the other end of which may be used for storing a paper roll. Rotatably mounted upon the cylindrical member is a barrel having a plurality of spirally arranged openings through which indicia carried by the cylindrical member may be selectively viewed. Adjacent the first mentioned barrel and likewise revolubly mounted upon the cylindrical member is a month-indicating barrel and likewise mounted upon the cylindrical member and adjacent to the month-indicating barrel is a day-of-the-week indicating barrel. Next in order is frictionally mounted an eraser carrying barrel of the device, this providing a pencil, accessible note paper, and an eraser together with a calendar which may quickly and easily be manipulated by the fingers of the user to indicate the month, dayofthe-month and day-of-the-week.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a combination pencil, paper storing device, eraser and calendar.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel means for indicating the date.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate and yet eifective and eflicient in use.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an enibodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but partly broken away to show details of construction,
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of a plurality of barrels forming a part of the invention,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an elongated hollow cylindrical member forming a part of the invention, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line. 55 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein an elongated hollow cylin- BENGIL CALENnARQ e e ret d 1 Application September23, 1949}.Serial No. 117;4I5i
lClaim. (crib- 168) I I drical member I!) having a slightly enlarged portion H at one end thereof in which is affixed a hollow cylindrical socket l2 having an annular ridge 1 3 therein whereby the inward movement of the socket I2 is limited. A pencil M of the wooden body type is adapted to be frictionally mounted in the socket l2.
Rotatably mounted upon the elongated cylindrical member or body In adjacent the enlarged portion ll thereof is a barrel l5 having a plurality of spirally arranged openings I6 formed therein.
Imprinted or otherwise carried upon the body I0 for selective display through the openings [6 is a series of day-of-the-month indicating indicia ll. Rotatably mounted upon the body l0 adjacent the barrel I5 is a month-indicating barrel l8 having all of the months of the year indicated on the periphery thereof and, likewise rotatably mounted upon the body it! and adjacent the barrel i8 is a day-of-the-week indicating barrel I9 having the days of the week indicated on the periphery thereof.
Frictionally mounted upon the end of the bod; l0 opposite to the enlarged portions i l and abutting the barrel I9, is a hollow cylindrical eraser holder 20 having an eraser 2i aflixed in the outer ends thereof. A roll of paper 22 is adapted to be stored within the body It] and is accessible at the eraser carrying end thereof.
In operation, it, will be apparent that the barrel l5 may be rotated until the proper indicia i1 is displayed through one of the openings [6 and that thereafter the barrel 18 may likewise be revolved until the proper month is shown next to the selected day-of-the-month. After this action takes place, the barrel I9 may be rotated until the proper day of the week is indicated next to the selected month and day of the month indicia heretofore selected. Thereupon the eraser holder 20 may be forced inwardly upon the body to thereby press against the barrel l9 and consequently the barrels l8 and I5 which, in turn, will bear against the enlarged portion H to thus retain the barrels I 5, l8 and I 9 in the preselected alignment. The use of the pencil is and the eraser 2! is thought to be obvious but it will be apparent that as note paper is needed, the roll 22 thereof may be removed from the body In and portions thereof torn away for use. If desired, the year date may be indicated upon the periphery of the member 20, as indicated at 23.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing 3 from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A calendar structure of the character described comprising an elongated cylindrical body, a pair of sleeves on the body, one of said sleeves projecting beyond one end of the cylindrical body to form a utility receiving socket in cooperation with the cylindrical body, the other sleeve being formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings spirally arranged around the circumference of the sleeve, said cylindrical body being provided with three circumferential rows of numerals with which the openings are registrabl; one row at a time, the socket forming sleeve being provided with indicia representing a particular amass 4 thereof and having indicia thereon representing the days of the week and a second barrel on the cylindrical body provided with indicia representing the months of the year, said barrels and sleeve having the openings therein being snugly but rotatably disposed on said cylindrical body.
