Claims.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a perpetual calendar for writing instruments, and has for one of its objects to provide a perpetual calendar for use in connection 5 with a writing instrumentality, such as an ordinary pen, pencil, fountain pen or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, eflicient and handy device of this character wherein the writing instrumentality forms a part of the calendar mechanism which latter is adjustable so as to constitute a perpetual calendar, particularly adapted for indicating days and dates of certain years, for use as a memorandum to remind a person of some special day or date because of some particular event, such as historical and memorial dates, birthdays or when certain bills, insurance premiums and the'like are due.
A further object of the invention is to provide a calendar of unique construction embodying two calendar strips each connected with a pair of shafts carrying gears which are selectively rotatable by a pinion engageable with either of the pairs of shaft gears.
A further object of the invention is to construct the basic calendar mechanism in the form of a capsule for insertion in a hollow supporting member, such as the hollow stem of a pen, pencil or the like, or a cap to be mounted upon an article, such as a pen or pencil.
A still further object of the invention is to providev a pointer carried by the supportingmember for particularly indicating any particular date under a particular day.
Still another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a supplementary chart for use in connection with the calendar whereby aperson is able to find any day and date of the twentieth century which will be indicated on the calendar.
' With these and other ends in view, this invention. consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a View of a writing instrumentality examplified as a fountain pen illustrating a calendar embodying my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the fountain pen cap showing part of the calres PATENT oFFicE endar mechanism therein, the-calendar strips being removed for sake of clearness.

In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 10 repres ents apart of a writing instrument which for purposes of illustration is shown herein as a fountain pen, and 11 is another part of a writing instrument, for instance a cap to cover either end of the part 10. While I have particularly illustrated the calendar in connection with a fountain pen, I do not limit myself to such use as it may be embodied in other articles or manufactured as separate'units, incapsule form to be assembled in or on any suitable supporting device.

I have shown this pointer as provided with a body 1'7 fitted in a dove-tailed slot 18 contiguous to the opening 12 and substantially of the same length.
Inside of the part 11 is fitted a casingor capsule 19 including body walls 20, a bottom wall 21, a top'wall 22 and at least two partitions 23 and 24. In the bottom wall 21 and the partition 24 are journalled 25 and 26, and on a pair of spaced parallel shafts the upper ends of said shafts fixed to their lower ends below the partition 23.
In other words, both sets of gears are located in thespace between the partitions 23 and 24.

To the shafts 25 and 26 are fixed the ends of a flexible date calendar strip 37 having day designations and dates therefor delineated thereon in a columnar form so as to be wound back and forth from one shaft to the other. Likewise,

In combination, a writing instrument ineluding a cylindrical cap having a long opening across said openings, a pointer carried by the cap 7 .a iaeent .sa d pnse op n and d l m u ed longitudinally of said opening for manual adjustmenh'a casing mounted in the upper end of said cap, a block cork mounted in said cap at the lower end of the casing to prevent any leaking ink from reaching the casing, said .casing having mammal is ets ormed he e which a e d posed adjacent the sides of the opening in the cap, a pair, of parallel spaced shafts mountedin the lower portion of the casing, a calendar strip having, days and dates delineated thereon i Column form, said strips having its ends attaohed to the shafts and threaded through the slots so as to be visible through the longer opening, gears mounted on the upper ends of said shafts, another pair of spaced parallel shafts journalled in the upper end of the casing, a calendar strip having months of the year and the number of days of said months delineated thereon, said last named strip having its ends attached to the second named pair [of shafts and threaded through the slots in the casing so as to be visible through the smaller opening in the cap, a post mounted in the upper end of the casing between thegears of each pair, a hollow shaft slidably and rotatably mounted on the post and projecting above the upper end of the casing, a clutch pinion mounted on the inner end of said hollow shaft for selective engagement with either pair of gears for actuating either pair of shafts, a knob on the outer end of said hollow shaft whereby the clutch pinion may be controlled manually, and atop m ve l ou t d n the u p d of the cap fornormally enclosing the knob.
