Description

W. L. PINK. Boot and Shoe Heel Attachment.
No. 211,982. Patented Feb. 4,1879.
FIG I F'IGIDI -WITNESSE.S=- I -|N\/ENTOR=- umzrsns. Puormu'rgmcmpnn. WASHINGTICN. 11v 0,
TATES PATENT FFIE.
WILLIAM L. FINK, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21 L982, dated February 4, 1879 application filed December 31, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM L. FINK, of the cit-y of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Boot and Shoe Heel Attachments, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear,
and exact description of my said invention, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in a heel-leveler-that is to say, a device designed for application to the worn edge of a boot'heel, to reestablish its original shape and retard further wear of the leather and it consists in a roughened wcdgeshaped plate, of some hard material, curved at its outer edge, which flares outwardly to steady the heel, and perforated to admit ofits being secured to the heel by means of screws, nails, or other fastening appliances.
In the further description of the invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is an outside view of a boot to which my improved device is applied. Fig. II is an under side view of the same, and Fig. III is a cross-section of the device on the dotted line it 3 Fig. II.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
A is a plate, preferably made of malleable cast-iron, having its outer edge curved to correspond with the curvature of the heel and flared outwardly to increase its base, and thereby steady the boot or shoe to which it is attached. The said plate is Wedgeshaped in cross-section, and is provided with countersunk holes a for screws or nails. The bottom surface of the plate is roughened, and its inner edge curved substantially as shown, in order not to present any projecting corners above the leather.
I prefer the plate made of malleable iron, this material combining hardness with flexibility, as in most cases of its application to heels it is necessary to slightly bend the plate to fit the heel. The plates are made of different sizes and angles; and in applying the device to a worn heel one is selected that corresponds nearest to the portion of the heel worn off, and fitted by bending the plate. It is then secured by nails or screws.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A device for leveling worn heels of boots and shoes, consisting of a curved plate having a roughened outer surface and outwardlyfiared outer edge and wedge-shaped in crosssection, substantially as herein described and shown.
\VM. L. FINK.
