v NECKWEAR CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 29, 1937 ISAA: C. LEVY QBWVW wow;
Patented June 7, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in neckwear construction and has particular reference to neckties to be worn in combination with the conventional waistcoat having a V-neck; the neckwear being characterized by the fact that it coacts with the edges defining the V-line of the waistcoat to simulate the existing of piping along such edges.
It has long been well established in design of masculine apparel to provide white piping along the edges of the V-line of the Waistcoats or vests. Such piping is quickly soiled and in addition it often happens that the presence of the piping ornamenting the waistcoat is not always desired in dressing for certain occasions. According to the present invention these diificulties have been overcome and the desired effect of the piping along the edges of the V-line of the waistcoat has been retained through the construction of a necktie having contrasting color areas which when worn provides a narrow contrasting line of color paralleling the edges of the waistcoat which define the V-line and give the appearance of piping along such edges.
Thus an object of the invention is to provide a neckwear such as a necktie or the like which is attractive in appearance and at the same time functions to modify to the eye the construction of the waistcoat by simulating the existence of piping along the edges defining the V-line of the waistcoat.
A further object is to provide a necktie or the like having contrasting colored areas having a V-shaped defining border, the border being so 10- cated and of such angularity as to be positioned slightly above the V-line of a waistcoat and in slightly spaced parallelism with the edges thereof when the necktie is being worn.
A further object is to provide a necktie of attractive construction which when worn in combination with a waistcoat has the characteristic of imparting to the waistcoat construction the existence of piping along the edges defining the V-line of the waistcoat.
In the drawing, wherein one form of the invention is illustrated in order that the general principles of the invention may be more clearly understood,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing the necktie as it appears when worn in combination with the waistcoat, and
Fig. 2 shows the necktie in an extended position, the contrasting color areas being indicated.
Referring to the drawing in Fig. 1 is shown a waistcoat [0 having the conventional V-neck defined by finished edge portions l2 and I 4. The neckwear construction to which the present invention is concerned as shown takes the form of a four-in-hand necktie I6 having contrasting color areas l8 and 20 which meet along border lines 22 and 24. The angularity of the border lines 22 and 24 is substantially that of the edge portions l2 and M of the waistcoat In so that the border lines when the necktie I6 is properly tied are in parallelism with the edges 12 and I4 and the border lines 22 and 24 are slightlyspaced from the edge portions l2 and I4 so that the color area 20 which is extended beyond the edge portions I2 and M has the appearance of piping connected to the underside and projecting beyond the edge portions l2 and I4. As in the past it has been the accepted 'fashion to provide white piping along the edges of the waistcoat defining the V-neck, accordingly, the contrasting color area 20 will be white, but it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to any particular color or colors as long as there is a contrast between the areas of the neckwear which will result in defining border lines between contrasting colors or materials which parallel the edge portions defining the neck of the waistcoat.
In Fig. 2 the necktie I6 is disclosed as being of the conventional shape with similarly colored and/or patterned areas l8 separated by the contrasting area 20 of White material. It is to be understood that the angularity of the upper border lines 22 and 24 is the only one of any importance and that as to the existence or the nonexistence of the border lines 26 and 28 that is a mere matter of design. The contrasting area 20 may be produced during the weaving of the neckwear goods or may be obtained through the dyeing of the areas I 8 and 20, or the necktie may be of similar color and pattern throughout and a piece of white fabric may be stitched to or otherwise secured to the necktie proper to provide the contrasting area 20. The particular manner in which the necktie is provided with contrasting color and/or pattern areas giving contrasting border lines therebetween in parallelism with the edge portions l2 and Id of the waistcoat is a matter which may widely vary in practice; the essence of the invention residing in the particular location of the contrasting areas and the manner in which the border lines between the contrasting areas coact with the edge portions of the waistcoat to simulate the conventional piping.
It will be appreciated that the angle of the gularity of said border line conforming substantially to that of the V-neck of the waistcoat, said V-shaped border line being so located when the necktie is worn that the same is positioned slightly above the V-neck of the waistcoat and in parallelism with said edge portions whereby the contrasting area which shows above the V-neck of the waistcoat will give to the waistcoat the appearance of edge piping.
