((71. 2-73) art slips when worn or in use tend to sag along the seam portions thereof where the gores are joined together due, in part, to' the fact that in making such prior art slips it is necessary to-v cut the material of which the gores are made largely on the biasto form the gores in such a' manner that they are substantially wider at the bottom than they areat the top, as is necessary in order to make a slip since slips are customarily portion thereof than they are at thetop and throughout the waist or bodice portion thereof.

The necessity for cutting the gores on a considerable bias, in making the prior art slips, causes a number of undesirable effects or results in the resulting slip, when the slip is worn, and

among these are the fact that such slips, because of the pronounced bias cut of the gores, tend to stretch both laterally or transversely and lengthand bulging of the slip and sagging of the same,

especially along the seams thereof This imparts a generally unattractive appearance to the overlying or outer garment of the wearer and since such a slip tends to sag along the seams the slip will hang unevenly and the bottom hem portion thereof will sag downwardly, along the seams, below the bottom of the wearer's outergarment, thereby causing the generally unattractive appearance which is referred to above.

Moreover, it is impossible to make a slip, com- '1 posedof only two, or four, or six gores, having a relatively narrow waist portion and a relatively wide or flaring skirt portion, as is possible and as is accomplished in making the new'slip which forms the subject matter of the present invention, since if a slip composed of only two, or four, or six gores is so designed it will possess the above mentioned and other undesirable features.

I have found, however,-that the foregoing and other diiiiculties which are experienced in the use of the prior art slips are overcome and eliminated in the use-of the new" slip'which forms the subject matter of the present invention and 5 which embodies an even number of gores not less than eight. r

' I have also found that in use the new slip is free from any tendency to sag or wrinkle along the seam portions thereof-and has, when worn,

a neat, attractive appearance which is enhanced by the contrast between the relatively narrow waistline and bodice portion of the new slip and the outwardly flaring bottomportion thereof.

Moreover, since the newslip is composed of not less than eight gores, the gores may be and are formed by cutting them with only a relatively slight bias as compared .to the bias out which is required when a slip is made of only two, or four or, six gores, and hence the new slip is free of that tendency to stretch and sag, due to the pronounced bias cut of the gores, as is inherent in theprior art slips, as pointed out above.

Accordingly,-an object of the present invention is to afford a new slip which in use overcomes the above mentioned and other difficulties experienced in theme of the prior art slips and which has the foregoing and other novel and advantageous features and advantages.

Other and further objects of the present invention' will be apparent from the following description and claims and will be understood'by reference to the accompanying drawingwhich, by way of illustration, shows a preferred embodiment and the principles thereof and What I now 'consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying these principles. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principles may be used and changes may be made as desired by those skilled sists of eight gores l3 which are joined together,

,in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claim.

It will be noted, by acareful' conslderationof" Figs. 1 and 2 of'the drawing; that-the skirt portion I! of the new slip tapers considerably from the upper end thereof, where it is'relatively narrow, to the bottom thereof where it isrelatively wide so that the new slip has the desired and fashionable narrow waist but is relatively wide and flares outwardly at the bottom thereof. 7

It will be noted, however, that by reason of the fact that the skirt portion of the new slip III, as shown, is composed of eight gores, each gore the resultingundeslrable appearance, when worn, thereof, as explained hereinbefore.

It will also be understood that while the present invention is primarily applicable to womens slips, it may also be applied to other articles or 7 types of -.womens. underwear, or lingerie, such as 43 is cut only'slightly on the bias of the goods,

compared to the extent or degree of bias cut which is required when employing only two, or four or six gores, and since, as is well understood by persons skilled in the art, as the bias cut is increased the tendency of the material to stretch and sag is increasedcorrespondingly, it will be seen that in the new slip the desired difference in width between the top and bottom of the skirt portion thereof is secured while, at the same time, the tendency of the slip to stretch and sag, particularly along the seams thereof is eliminated, or, at least, greatly reduced or minimized. This is due, to a large extent, to the fact that since the total and desired difference between the top and bottom portions of the skirt portion of the new slip is divided up equally between eight gores,

- thereof overcome the abov mentioned and other difficulties which are inherent in the use of the prior art slips, and that the present invention thus accomplishes the above mentioned and other objects of the invention and provides a slip which is, neat and attractive in appearance and has the desired relatively narrow waist portion and outwardly flaring skirt or bottom portion while, at the same time, being free from the gowns and the like, without departing from the purview or, scope of the present invention.

Iclaimr, y I A womans slip including a skirt portion comprising eight gores or panels of substantially the same size joinedtogether atthe side edges thereof by stitching along seam lines, each of the said gores being tapered slightly, in plan, so that each of the said ,gores'is somewhat wider at the bottom thanitis at the top thereof whereby due to the relatively large number of said gores the said skirt portion of thesaid slip is substantially wider at the bottom than it is in the upper and waist portion thereof and a pronounced outward flaris imparted to the said skirt portion of the said slip, each of said gores or panels having both the woof and the warp threads thereof extending at an angle relative to its own longitudinal center line, whereby said slip is substantially free from tendency to wrinkle or to sag along the seam portions thereof or elsewhere in the said skirt portion of the said slip, said slip including a bodice portion joined at its lower edge to the upper edge of the said skirt portion of. the said slip by stitching along a seam line, the front of the said skirt portion of the said slip embodying two centrally arranged gores for panels eachhaving the upper edge thereof joined tothe lower edge of the front of the said bodice portion of said slip and the upper edge of each of said centrally arranged front gores being curved so that the highest point in the said upper edge of each of the'said two said centrally arranged gores in tendency of prior art slips, composed of only the front of the said skirt portion of said slip is disposed below one of the busts of the wearer of the slip, when the said slip is in use, and the upper edge portions of the two said centrally arranged front gores are joined to the said bodice portion of the said slip along a curved line extending concavely downwardly between the said two highest points.
