UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. BISSELL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN BROILER ATTACHMENTS FOR STOVES, RANGES, 8L0.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,492, dated January 21, 1879 application filed November 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. BrssELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Broiler Attachments for Stoves, Ran'ges, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, in perspective, of devices embodying my invention, the stove or range door being open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, the door being closed as when in use.
, Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to broiler attachments for stoves, ranges, &c.; and consists in combining, with a recessed or sunken door of a stove or range, a drip-pan adapted to receive and retain a broiler, whereby is obtained a neat and convenient set of devices for the purpose specified, without materially changing the construct-ion or appearance of the stove or range.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
The door may be a single door or a double doorthat is to say, with a swinging frame as preferred, and pivoted in any suitable manner, either to let down or swing. In general I prefer the double door or swinging frame, as The broiler may be inserted after the door has been opened or let down for that purpose, or may be inserted and removed through a suitable slot.
The devices preferred by me are shown in the drawing, wherein A indicates the stove or range front, and a the grate. Hinged on or otherwise secured to the front A is the door frame I), provided with a suitable catch.
0 1ndicates the door proper, which is sunken or depressed to form a suitable cavity for the reception of a drip-pan, which is usually retained in place by one or more lugs, 0 This door may also be notched, as at 0 to permit the'long handle of the broiler to project. d represents a drip-pan fitted to and adapted to be stored in the recess of door 0. In conjunction with such devices an ordinary or any approved form of broiler, 0, may be used.
To employ the devices thus described, all that is necessary is to open the outer door, 0, and insert the broiler and its contents in the drip-pan 01 within the recess, and then to close the door, so as to bring the broiler in front of the fire, after which the door may be opened to inspect the article or turn the broiler from time to time, as is found necessary.
The essential elements are the sunken door and its drip-pan or broiler, which may be variously modified without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention. The swinging door-frame (or double door) is desirable, but may be omitted or combined with the front or with the door proper, according to the judgment or fancy of the constructer.
When the frame b is employed an ordinary door or plate may be substituted for the broiler or sunken door 0, when the latteris not in use, if so desired; and in many instances adetachable plate, as indicated by the dotted line may be used to close the recess of the sunken door 0 and inclose and protect the drip-pan when not in use, all of which matters of detail will be inserted or omitted, according to the judgment of the constructer or the demands of the trade.
The advantages of my invention are their simplicity, neatness, and convenience.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a stove or range, of a sunken or recessed door and a drip-pan or broiler arranged therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a stove or range, of a pivoted door-frame, a recessed or sunken door, and a drip-pan arranged therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said FRANK S. BrssELL, have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK S. BISSELL.
