Description

M. SMITH. Combined Tool;
Patented Jan. 7, 1879.
AfToRNEY Unrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARSHALL M. SMITH, OF KIRKVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 211.271, dated January 7, 1879; application filed November 23, 1878.
reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved combination tool; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are details of the parts thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in compound tools; and the nature of the invention consists in a hammer, pinchers, nail-puller, and wrench combined in a single tool, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the handle of my improved tool, of the form shown in Fig. 2, having on its upper and lower edges the strengthening-ribs a, and being in section of the form of a double T- iron. At its griping end two or more rectangular notches, b, are made, of different dimensions, to suit the different sizes of nuts, the flange a being carried completely around the said notches, as shown ata, Figs. 1 and 2.
0 indicates the face or working part of the hammer, arranged at right angles to the handle, and not difi'ering essentially in form from that commonly used. 7
The handleA, above the face and at its end, has a semicircular recess, d, and a claw, d, the bend of which is toward the face, the said claw forming one of the jaws of the pinchers.
B indicates the movable lever of the pinchers, the same being shorter than the handle A, and provided at one end with a lateral offset, 6, fitting snugly in recess d, and having a perforation, t, in it, registering with a similar perforation, t, in the end of handle A. This oifset has projecting from it a claw, f, that constitutes the second jaw of the pinchers. It has also a straight-edge, g, terminating in a shoulder, g, next the handle portion of said lever. The handle A, with its appliances, and the lever B, with its attachments, are cast complete each in one piece.
0 indicates the peen, the same terminating usually in a point, h, whereby it is adapted to be used as apunch, and having at its other extremity a rectangular fork, h, designed to straddle the working ends of the parts A B aforesaid.
The bottom of the fork rests snugly up against the straight-edge gof offset 0, and the peen bears upon the shoulder g at the handle end of said straight-edge, as shown in Fig. 1.
The branches of the fork of the peen are provided with perforations i registering with the perforations i i of the parts'B and A. The parts A, Hand 0 are connected together by a rivet, 41,. passing through the perforations i 2" i and headed upon its projecting end.
By drawing the lever B away from the handle the jaws f d are opened, and may be engaged with a nail-head or other object after the manner of a nail-puller or pinchers. By then drawing the lever so that the tool will vibrate on the peen as a bearing, thesaid jaws will close and gripe the nail automatically, the said peen being held against vibration by the straight-edge g and shoulder 9 relative to the movable jaw.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The handle A, having the hammer-face c, the recess d, claw d, notches b, and perforation 1', the lever-handle, having olfset c, with claw f, straight-edge g, shoulder g, and perforation i and the peen 0, having point h, the rectangular recess h, and perforations i and the rivet 1', combined to form a compound tool, consisting of a hammer, pinchers, wrench, and nail-puller, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARSHALL M. SMITH.
