COMBINATION TOOL.
170.379,773. Patented Mar. 20, 1888.
Z/'esf my?? UNITED STATES PATENT FRIEDRICH VILLIAM EHLMANN, OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,773, dated March 20, 1888.
Application led January 12, 1887. Serial No. 224.107. (No model.)
To all whom iv' may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH WILLIAM EIILMANN, a citizen ofthe United States. and a resident of Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, ot' which the following is a speciication.
The object of my invention is to combine several tools of general utility in a single implement of but t'ew parts.
The invention will be first fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly referred to and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, in which like parts are'represented by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout the various views, Figure l is a side elevation of my combinationtool. Fig. 2 is an inside elevation ol' one of the pivoted members detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation ot' the opposite member, and Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the end ot' the handle.
The combination-tool,con1prising a hatehet, pipe-tongs, pinehers, tackdrawer, and screwdriver, is composed of two members, A and B, made, preferably, of cast-steel and pivoted to gether by a bolt or rivet, c, either with or without washers d interposed between the nutand bend ot' the bolt and the sides of the pivoted members. The member A is a hatehet, the side of which is countersunk at a, andthe wall ot the countcrsunk portion cnt away at et to receive the opposite member, B. The handle of the part A terminates at the end at in a screw-driver. The head oi' the hatehet has also projecting from it a hooked and serrated projection, a, which forms one jaw of a pinchers, and also a pipe-tongs, and near the 0pposite edge the lmndle ot' the part A is recessed and serrated at e" to provide one-half of a smaller tongs for the purpose of removing and replacing gas tips. The part B, which has a circular part, b, to iit into countersunk portion of part A, forming a joint with said part, has also a hooked and serrated end, b', which forms the opposite jaw of the pinchers and pipe-tongs, and the opposite end of the handle is bent and forked to form a nail-puller, b2. Vhen the two parts A and I3 are closed, the beveled end ot' the part A. which .forms the screw-driver, passes into the forked end If, so that the two handles of' the pincbers form a firm handle for the hatchet. The part B is also recessed and serrated at I) opposite to the part a, forming the opposite member of the nipple-tongs. It will thus be seen that the parts A and B may be cnstjnst as shown, and the only fitting required is passing the boltpivot c through thel parts c and I) and tightening the nut, or riveting the boltepivot c, it' the parts are not lo be detnclmbly con nccted.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination-tool consisting of two pvotcd members, one member comprising a hatchet-head, hammer, screw-driver, and one of the jaws oi' a pinchers and pipe-tongs, the other member comprising a nail-puller and the opposite jaws ofthe pinchers and pi1tietongs, the said screw-driver having its narrow edge in the direction of the nail-puller and the said nail-puller being curved in the direction ot' the screw driver, so that the screwdriver will enter the clnw of the naihpuller when the jaws are closed, and thus furnish a firm handle for the hammer and hatchet, substantially as specitied.
2. The combination o" the two members A and B and the pivot-bolt unitingl them, the said part A comprising a hatchet and hammer head and a screw driver, which has ils edge in the same plane as the edge ofthe lmtchct, and the part- B eomprisi ng a taekpuller having its bifurcated end curved in the direction of the screw-driver, so as to embrace it and with it FRIEDRICH iilhhIAM EHLMANN.
