IMPROVEMENT IN GIL-FEXTURES FOR lLLUWlINATlNG PURPOSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2B ,9Il, dated December 17, 1878 application filed May 1.5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOYD ALLEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massa chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Oil-Fixtures for Illuminating Purposes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in chandeliers in which a single movable fountain-reservoir is used for supplying oil to one or more burners, as desired; and the invention consists in connecting the supporting-bars to the pendant by means of hinges at the upper ends, the lower ends being detachably connected to the horizontal tubes or branches, so as to enable the parts to be readily taken apart and arranged in a small compass, for convenience of packing and transportation.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a chandelier embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the reservoir with its pointed tube, and showing a method of connecting the pendent rods with the horizontal tubes. Fi g. 3 represents a detachable glass fount.
The chandelier is composed of the rods D, which are attachedto the upper pendant, E, by means of hinges d, the horizontal arms 0, and the centralholder, F, of thefount A. Thelower ends of the rods D areprovided with screwthreads 0, which pass through holes in the horizontal arms 0, and on the ends of which are screwed the nuts or buttons H. Y
The object of this construction of the chandelier is to enable it to be taken apart and folded in a small compass for packing and transportation. Other means may be adopted for attaching the lower ends of the rods D to the arms (3, so that they can readily be detached.
A represents a fount, made of glass and supported in a central holder, F. It is made removable, so that it can at any time be filled by simply taking it out of the holder, and, be- 1 in g of glass, the amount of oil in the fount can always be readily seen.
In the lower end of the fount A is secured, by any suitable means, a tube, 13, the lower part of which is cut away at an angle, so as to leave an oblong opening, as shown. The upper portion of this oblong opening in the tube B is designed to be at or about onalevel with that required for the oil in the burners G, so that when the oil falls to a level just below the upper end of the opening air will enter the tube, and, passing into the fount, will cause the oil to descend from the fount and fill the space about the tube above the opening. A continuous feed of the oil to the burners will thus be supplied in just such an amount as required, withoutdanger of overfeedin g the burners, causing an undue overflow of oil.
. As many arms or branches for the burners may be used as desired, and the fount may be of any ornamental or desired shape.
WVha-t I claim as my invention is- The rods D, hinged to the pendant E, and detachably connected to the arms 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BOYD ALLEN.
Tvitnesses J. H. ADAMS, J. F. DONNELL.
