Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
HENRY W. P. GOLSON, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,702, dated April 17, 1877 application filed January 22, 1877.
Be it known that I, HENRY W. P. GoLsoN,
of the city of Buii'alo, county of Erie, and
State of New York, have invented a certain mechanism, to be called Oolsons Lamp- Lighter, of which the following is a specification:
The object of the invention is to furnish a small and convenient apparatus for lighting kerosene'oil or other oil lamps without being obliged to remove either the chimneys or shades. It can also be used for lighting gasburners; but its principal use is for lighting lamps upon which are used chimneys'and shades.
The invention is described as follows, to wit: Said invention consists of a small metal conical cup, into the top of which is screwed a long hollow tube, on the top of which is placed a cap, in which cap is an asbestus or wiregauze wick. 0n the side of this conical cup is a handle, by means of which the whole thing is operated.
The apparatusis operated as follows: The conical cup is filled with alcohol or other light burning-fluid, and a wick placed in the cap to prevent the alcohol flowing out too rapidly when the cup is inverted. The operator takes the cup by the handle and, inverting it, lights the wick at the end of the cap, and then inserts the tube into the top of the lamp-chimney, passing it down until it reaches and lights the wick of the lamp.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents the apparatus complete A, the conical cup; B, the tube; 0, the cap, in which isrcontained the asbestus or wire-gauze wick; D, the handle.
Fig. 2 represents a sectional drawing, like letters representing like parts.
Fig. 3 represents the cap 0, with its upper end exposed, showing the small orifice 0, through which the wick allows the fluid to pass for ignition.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the cup A, in which is held the alcohol or other light burning-fluid, with the handle D, tube B, cap O,and asbestus or wire-gauze wick, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
H. W. P. GOLSON.
