FLASH-LIGHT APPARATUS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Appiimiou sied May 1o, 1906. serial No. 316.147.
170 a/ZZ whowl/ it may concern:
Be it known that I,`JAMEs A. FoUsT, a citize'n of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Allen and State of have invented new and useful Imrovements in Flash-Light Apparatus, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a iiash-light apparatus for use in photography.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus of this kind and also a screen to be used in connection therewith embodying certain novel features of construction to be hereinafter described and claimed.
VIn the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a pers ective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a si e elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. l
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 denotes a stand comprising a base 7l and a tubular standard 8, rising therefrom, on which is slidable a tubular stem 9, which is held at the desired height by a set-screw 10. Mounted on the stem 9 is a powder-tray 11 and a lamp-support 12, these parts being separated by a partition 13. The lamp-support is formed by extending the partition downwardly, as at 14, and rearwardly, as at 15. On the bottom of the powder-tray is a short stem 16, which is removably seated in the upper end of the stem 9. In the partition 13 is an opening 17, and above said opening and over the owder-tray is a downwardly-directed de ector 18. On each side of the deflector are flame-spraying cones 19, which are secured to the partition.
On the support such height that its flame will be directly in front or in alinement with the opening 17. Behind the lam is a spraying device comprising a vertica ly-arranged tube 21, which is comiected by a pipe 22 with a reservoir 23, containing alcohol or some other igniting fluid. The tube 21 is bent over at its top end and directed toward the lamp, the end ofthe tube being fitted with a screw-cap 24, having a spray-opening 25 arranged so as to be in line with the flame of theklamp. The reservoir 23 is closed by a cap 26, having a nipple 12 is a lamp 20, which is of' 27, to which a flexible tube 28 is attached. This tube has a bulb 29, which is also connected by a tube 30 to the shutter of the camera. Attached to the support 12 isa bracket for supporting the tube 28. .This
bracket is preferably made of wire, which is bent to form legs 31 and an eye 32, through which the tube extends.
Slidable on the stein 9 is a block 33, which is adjustably held thereon by a set-screw 34. Extending from said block are stop-pins 35, which are adapted to support arms 36, which carry the screen-frame. The arms extend from opposite sides of the block and are pivoted thereto, being extended into openings 37 in the block. The outer ends of the arms are connected by a cross-rod 38. The screenframe 39 comprises a single piece of wire, which is bent into a substantially rectangular form. The ends of the wire are bent into eyes 40, through which the cross-rod 38 extends. The ends of the frame are connected near the bottom by a cross-rod 41, over which extends a clamp 42, which is of substantially U shape, so as to form clamping-iingers which engage the cross-rod 40, being clamped thereto by a set-screw 43. The screen 44 may be a piece of any suitable fabric or material, which is secured to the frame 39 in any desired manner.
A screen constructed and mounted as herein described can be adjusted at various heights and also extended at different angles to properly diffuse the light. It can also be swung around to extend behind the apparatus if it is desired to throw the light on the subject. The flash-light apparatus can be entirely removed from its supporting-standard and the screen used in daywork.
The charge of powder on the tray is ignited by ressure on the bulb 29. This shoots a fine stream of alcohol across the iiame of the lamp 20, and, being thereby ignited the iiame is directed through the opening 17 and deflected by the plate 18 upon the explosive powder. Inasmuch as the bulb 29 is connected to the igniting device and the camera-shutter, said parts will be operated simultaneously.
I claim- The combination with a stand, and a flashlight apparatus mounted thereon, of a block IOO slidably mounted on the stand, stops project- In testimony whereof I have signed my ing from the block, arms pivoted to the block name to this specification in the .presence of and engageable With the stops, a cross-rod two subscribing Witnesses. Connecting the outer ends of the arms, and a JAMES A. FOUST. screen-carrying frame pivotally mounted on Witnesses:
the cross-rod, and Carrying a clamp engage- H. J. MCKNIGHT,
able with the cross-rod. J. H. BENNET.
