Description

UNITED STATES PATEN FICE.
SAMUEL IV. GEERY, OF NEIVARK, NE7 JERSEY, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF IHS .RIGHT TO J AMES BOIVERS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GALVANIC CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatcnt No. 210,932, dated December 17, 1878; application filed March 19, 1878.
To all whom -z't may concer/n:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL XV. GEERY, of the city of Newark, in the county of Esser and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in corsets, whereby they are made to conduce to and promote the health of the wearer.
The accompanying drawing` illustrates the nature and character of thc invention, in which- Figure l represents one side or half of a corset embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 represents the springs or stays detached from the corset and the wires which them, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are modifications of the same, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in each ligure.
My invention consists in providing either or both sides of a corset with a series of steel springs or stays, a, as indicated in the drawing, which are alternately plated or covered with zinc and platinum or copper, and uniting them by means of cotton cord, copper Wire, or straps b, or a series of said Wires or straps, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby preventing rust and imparting to a corset a volta-galvanic clement, which renders it highly thera pcutic in character Without detracting from the ordinary uses and advantages of the corset.
By means of this improvement medicinal applications and remedies may be readily and advantageously introduced into the system, as will he readily understood.
The springs or stays a may be arranged singly side by side, as indicated in Figs. l and 2; or each stay may be double or composed of two plates, as indicated in Figs. 3 or 5, one of which is plated with zinc, and the other with platinum or copper, as above stated, so that cach stay forms an independent battery. Said plates may be perforated, as shown and indicated at c or e in Fig. 2, for the purpose of admitting the connecting copper Wires or straps b or the latter may be wrapped around said plates a, as indicated at d in Figs. 2 and 4.
I do not claim, broadly, the combination of plates of electrically-di'erent metals in bands for application to the body; but
I claim as a new article of manufacture- A corset the stays of which are of steel, plated with metals electro-positive and electro-negative to each other, and connected by Wires or bands, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses. f
SAMUEL W. GEERY.
Witnesses OLIVER Daarin, l. J. INsLEn.
