ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed April 13, 1916. Serial No. 90,926.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SOLOMON E. SPAULD- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Pierce and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Electrical Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
It is the primary object of my invention to provide an electric collar or neck band adapted for use in the treatment of diseases of the thyroid gland, such as goiter, or the like.
Another object is the provision of an electrical device for the treatment of diseases of the thyroid gland which consists of zinc and copper strips connected to form a collar or neck band adapted to be placed around the neck so that galvanic action of the same may be communicated to the diseased gland.
I attain these and other objects by means of the'construction and combination of the various parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
The drawings illustrate a perspective view of my device.
The numeral 1 indicates a copper strip which is bent in semi-circular form to fit the back of the neck. Connected to the ends 2, by suitable means, such as eyelets 3, so as to be in contact with the same, are zinc strips 1 which increase in width toward the free ends 5 thereof, to provide a maximum surface for engaging the diseased thyroid gland. The ends 5, as will be noted, are provided with apertures 6 for the reception of suitable means, as a lacing string 7, to secure the band in place around the neck of the wearer.
In use my collar or neck band is placed in position around the neck so that the zinc strips 1 -engage the diseased thyroid gland and is secured by the lacing string 7 in such a manner that the ends 5 of the zinc strips 1 will not come in contact with each other for a reason which will presently appear. It will be apparent that one of the zinc strips 4 and the copper strip 1 will form an electrical couple for generating current. The opposite strip 4 it will be noted is adapted to serve as a conductor for the current, which by reason of the spaced relation of the ends 5 of the zinc strips 4: will be completed through the diseased gland of the wearer of the neck band.
' It is apparent that my device may also be used as a belt, or the like, in the treatment of various other diseases.
While, it will be seen from the description taken in connection with the drawings that I have provided a device clearly operable and efficient for the purpose described, I do not claim the exact construction and reserve the right to make certain minor changes and alterations as will not depart from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A neck band for medical use comprising a metal strip bent to fit the back of the neck, a strip of dis-similar metal connected to each end thereof and bent to engage the front of the neck and terminating short of each other, the first mentioned strip and one of the second mentioned strips forming an electrical couple, and the other of said second mentioned strips adapted to serve as a conductor whereby an electrical circuit may be com pleted through the neck of the wearer.
2. An electrical neck band comprising a metal strip bent to fit the back of the neck, a strip of dis-similar metal connected to each end thereof and bent to engage the front of the neck, and'means whereby the band may be secured around the neck.
8. An electrical neck band comprising a metal strip bent to fit the back of the neck, a strip of dis-similar metal connected to each end thereof for relative movement, each of said strips bent to engage the front of the neck, and means carried by each of said strips whereby the band may be fastened around the neck.
4:. An electrical neck band comprising a copper strip bent to fit the back of the neck, a zinc strip connected to each end thereof adapted for movement with relation thereto, each of said zinc strips being bent to fit the front of the neck and widening toward the free ends thereof to present a maximum surface for engaging the neck, and the free ends of said strips terminating short of each other and having apertures formed therein for the reception of means whereby the band may be fastened around the neck.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
