Application July 15,
1 Claim.
Our invention relates generally to means for locking the sashes of windows against relative movement, and particularly to a lock to be mounted on one sash and engageable with the other sash, in a manner to permit both sashes to assume partially open positions while preventing the sashes or either of them from being further opened, and an important object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement of this character which is inexpensive, and can be easily installed.
Other important objects of our invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration we have shown a, preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general elevational View of the inner side of a window showing the device of the invention incorporated in the sash structure.
Figure 2 is an elevational edge view showing the bolt of the device extended in looking position.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the device.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the easing with the bolt removed.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View taken through Figure 3 approximately on the line 6-6.
Figure '7 is an end view of the spring.
Figure 8 is a side elevational view of the belt.
Figure 9 is an end View of the shell.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates a conventional type of window structure containing the upper sash 6 and the lower sash I. (In accordance with the present invention the embodiment which is generally designated 8 is installed on the side rail of the upper sash 6, and this look comprises the suitably shaped plate 9 which has screw or bolt receiving holes l0 and H therein receiving attaching means for attaching the same in place as indicated in Figure 1, and suitably mounted on the back of this plate 9 is the tubular casing !2 which extends in a generally horizontal position.
Inside of the tube 12 and in vertically spaced positions are the housing members l3 and I4 which are joined as indicated by the numerals l5 and I6 to a receiving opening in the face plate 9. The tube has a partly closed end I! which has punched out portions l8 and I9 which are 1936, Serial No. 90,770 (01. 292-450) bent over as indicated by the numeral 20 to form a holder for one end of the expanding helical spring 2|.
Slidable in the housing members !3 and I4 is the rotatable bolt which is generally designated 22 and which comprises a tubular portion 23 which is circumposed on the spring 2| at the head 24 which has a reduced boss 25 inserted in the outer end of the tube 23. Fingers 26 on the inner end of the boss 25 provide means for engaging the cross member 21 of the spring 2! in a manner to tension the bolt 22 for rotation in a direction opposite to that in which it may be turned in the operation thereof. The outer end of the head 24 has a counter-sunk central portion 21 and the annular portion thereabout is provided with notches or knurls 28 facilitating manuual turning of the bolt. The bolt has at its inner end a laterally extending pin 29 which slides in the slot 30 in the tube l2, the said slot 30 having at its inner end the lateral bolt locking portion 3! and at its front end the lateral bolt locking portion 32.
When the bolt is in the locking position illustrated in Figures 6, the same may be rotated to the left to place the stop pin 29 in the portion 32 of the slot, so as to make it impossible to push the bolt inwardly into the unlocking position without first turning the bolt to the left to release the pin from the slot portion 32. The slot portion 3| is provided so that the locking pin 29 of the bolt will upon rotation of the bolt by the torque force of the spring be engaged with the portion 3i and thereby lock the bolt in the inward or retracted position. To release the bolt from the retracted position the bolt must be rotated by application of manual force to the head 24 in a direction to bring the stop pin 29 out of the slot portion 3!, at which time the force of the expanding spring 2! will project the bolt forwardly into the extended or sash-locking position illustrated in Figures 2 and 6, wherein the bolt 22 overlies the upper end of the lower window sash I, so that the lower window sash 1 cannot be moved upwardly relative to the upper sash 6 beyond the point of engagement of the upper end of the lower sash with the bolt 22. Both of the sashes may be moved upwardly until the upper end of the upper sash engages the top of the window frame; and similarly the sashes may both be moved downwardly until the lower end of the lower sash engages the bottom of the window frame. For the same reasons the lower sash or the upper sash may be fully closed at a time when either i one or the other is in a partially opened position,
limited by the arrangement of the device of the invention and. the precise positioning thereof.
Although we have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be definitely understood that we do not'desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials, and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, Within the spirit of 'the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.
{What is claimed is:-
A window lock comprising a cylindrical casing open at one end and substantially closed at its other end and having a mounting plate at the open end, said casing being further provided with an internal longitudinal guide-way having laterally and correspondingly directed latching tel;- minals, a helical compression spring extending longitudinally and centrally of the said casing and secured at its inner extremity to the said substantially closed end of the casing, a tubular plunger slidable and rotatable in said casing and circumposed. on the said spring, a pin on said plunger engaging in the guide-Way of the casing, a separately formed plunger head provided with a reduced boss having a forced fit in and closing the outer end of the plunger, said boss providing a bearing surface against which the outer end of the spring is pressed to normally urge the plunger outwardly of the casing, andfingers on the inner end of the boss in engagement with the spring and holding the latter in a state of torsion effective to rotate the plunger at the end of its inward and outward travel for automatically seating'the pin of the plunger in a latching terminal of the said guideway.
