Description

Jan. 25, 1938. F. DAHL COMBINED TABLE AND IRONING BOARD I Filed Aug. 6. 1936 Patented Jan. 25, 1938 UNITED COMBINEDTABLEFAM momno BOARD Inked naiil, Clear'hake,.S Dak.
v applicatmn Augusrs, 1336, Serial N0.*9 i',687 I 3Claims., (oi. sa -105) Y This invention relates to the class of furniture and pertains particularly to'a novel combination of table and ironingboard structure. 7
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a table having an ironing board built thereinto and having a shiftable'topjportion whereby when the said'top portion is shifted the same plane as the table top and theshiftable leaf portion thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a structure of the above described {character wherein the said shiftable leaf and theironing board are spring controlled so that upon; the release of a holding means for theleaf the latter will automatically move laterally in the plane of the table top and the ironing board will be automatically projected out to its working position in the plane of the table top. r l
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a combined table and ironing board embodying the present invention Figure 2 is a sectional View through the Forming a part of the'top'is' a leaf 3 which has a tongue 4 along each longitudinal edge and these I tongues engagein corresponding grooves 5 in the abutting edge portions'pf the'adjacent top pieces. It will thus be apparent that the leaf 3 "5 may be shifted longitudinally to, formah open-.
" Formed beneath the top' of the table and bea heath the opening in whiehthe leaf '3' moves is V a box or housing- 6 whichexte'ndsthe' full width 10 of the table and which is "closed at it's bottom and foursides, the only access tothis housing being through the top of the table when 'the'lea'f 3 is shifted. Y 'f Secured to' the under side of the leaf} is one 1 5 end of a coil spring I which has its other end attached to the side apron portion 8 of thetable structure. This spring is, of course; disposed within the housing 6 and it is normally under tension so that when the leaf 3 is released by'igo theholdingmeans aboutw be described it will function to slide the leaf laterally; This lateral sliding movement of the leaf is limited "by a transversely extending cleat 9 which is secured to the underside .ofthe leaf and which limits the movement of the leaf by being brought'into abut-'- tingfr'elation with theapron portion 8 to which the spring 1 is attached. I
' As illustrated the leaf 3 is set into} the top of the table adjacent one edge thereof so that I there is only a relatively narrow portion of the top at one side of the leaf. This narrow top portion is indicated by thenumeral ID and at a suitable point is provided with the transverse bore l I which is formed in the outer edge and extends inwardly toward the opening in which the leaf 3 positions. In this bore is a shiftable latch pin I2 and the leaf 3 is provided with an edge recess l3 which is drawn into alignment with the bore II when the leaf is in a position to. oompletely fill the table top opening. This pin 12 retains the leaf against movement under the movement of the spring I.
Adapted to be housed in the casing Bis an ironing board M which is of a width to substantially fill the opening in the table top when the leaf 3 is shifted laterally. This board It has its forward end or nose supported in any suitable manner, as by the bracket I5 which is inclined downwardly into the housing 6, so that when the leaf 3 is moved laterally or outwardly to uncover the board closing housing, the board may be shifted outwardly in adirection opposite that in which the leaf ismoved by the spring "I. The board l4 adjacent its rear end has secured to A E T 6 f I its underside the transverse cleat l6 and also secured to the under side of the board adjacent this end is a coil spring H which has its opposite end secured to that depending portion of the table structure which forms'a continuation of the skirt 8 and which extends across or closes the end of the housing 6 opposite the end to which the spring 1 is connected.
The board l4 also has formed in one side edge and adjacent'its rear end, the opening l8 which, when the board is moved outwardly to operative position under the influence of the spring l'i,
comes to position in alignment with the bore-ll so that the pin 12 can be reinserted for engage -saidopeningfa sliding connection between the ment in the opening l8 and thussec'ure 'and support the inner end of the ironing board in working position. As will be apparent, the cleat" it which is secured to theironing'boardlimits' this movement outwardly as; the cleat 9 of the,
6 and the leaf is held in place by the pin l2, the
removal of the pin will permit the spring 'IV to shift the leaf outwardly in one direction and when this occurs the leaf will no longer hold the forward end of the ironing board-in placeand the spring I! will then become effective to slide the ironing board out in the opposite direction until the cleat' l6 stops its movement. The ironing board may then be raised tothe plane of the table top and secured in place by reinserting the pin l2 so that its inner endwill engage in the opening IS in the edge of the-bore.
I claim:-
,1. In a table structure of the character. .described, a top having an opening-extending the full width thereof, a leaf fillingsaid opening, sliding connecting means between the edges of the opening and the edges of said leaf permitting the leaf to be shifted laterally to uncover the opening, a board having a width through a portion of its length sufiicient to .fill a portion of the opening when the leafhas been shifted to one position therein, said leaf when shifted to said one position having an end projecting beyond one side of the table top and said board 2. In a structure of the character described,
,,.;a. table having a top provided with an opening iitending the full width thereof, a leaf filling edges of the leaf and the edges of the opening, "a casing disposed beneath said opening, latching ,means-fonsecuring said leaf in opening filling position, a spring connecting the under side of the leaf with a fixed part of the body of the table at a point to effect the shifting of the leaf laterally when the latching means is released to partially uncover the opening, a board having a width through a portion of its length sufficient to fill the opening, said board being of a size to beihoused in said casing when the leaf is in ,openingfilling position, spring means coupling the under side of the board with a fixed part of the table and so arranged as toproject the board from the casing when the opening is uncovered, and said latching means engaging and securing the board in projected position, said spring means for the leaf and board operating to project the same in opposite directions.
3. In a table of the character described, a top having an opening therein, aleaf filling said opening and movable in one direction in the plane of the top to partly uncover the opening, a board having a width to fill the uncovered portion of the opening, means beneath the top for supporting the board beneath the leaf when the latter is in closing position in the opening, means for projecting the board into the opening opposite to the direction of movement of the leaf when theleaf is moved to open position, and means for, retainingthe board in the opening in the plane of the top.
