tJNiiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. WEBB, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES R. HADLEY COMPANY, 03 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPDRATION OF CALIFORNIA.
'COMBI NED BINDER TRAY AND COVER.
Application filed May 17,
This invention relates to trays for looseleat binders and covers therefor, and an object of the invention, in general, is to provide a cover that cooperates with the tray to enclose the binder held in the tray.
Another object is to make provision for locking the cover in place on the tray.
Further objects are simplicity of construction and low cost of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages may appear in the subjoined detailed description.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a side elevation of a combined tray and cover, constructed in accordance with the provisions of this invention, the cover being shown partly in section.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view, partly in section, from the line indicated by 2-2, Fig. 1. i
Figure 3 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the cover. t
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail, partlyin section, of the means for adjustably holding one of .the guide rods in ditterent'positions.
Figure 5 is an end .view. of the crank handle. 1 i
There is provided a tray 6-ofan suitable construction and designed to 101d .a 100567185111? binder,'indicated in general by the character 7. The binder may be of any suitable construction, either of the type that is permanently mounted on the tray orof the type detachable therefrom. The construction of. thebinder does not enter into this invention.
The tray 6 is provided on the opposite sides thereof with inverted -U-shaped members 8 which, in this instance, constitute guides against which the edges of the leaves in the binder may engage in order to limit lateral shifting of said leaves, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 2. In this in stance, the members 8' are movably mounted on the tray, being hinged or pivoted, the pivots being indicated at 9 and turning in bearings or sockets 10 formed in the end members 11 of the tray.
In this instance, means are provided to adjustably hold the members 8 in different positions, and such means are constructed as follows: The means for adjustably holding the members 8 in difierent positions are constructed alike for both of said members and, therefore, only one of them need be de- 1926. Serial N0. 109,505.
scribed. The member 8 is provided near one end with a socket 12 in which is slidably mounted a detent 13 in the form of a pin, there being a coil spring 1 1 in the socket back of the pin to urge said pin outwardly so that said pin may be selectively engaged with seats 15 formed in the inner face or the adjacent end member 11. In the instance shown in the drawings, there are two seats 15, one adapted to be engaged by the detent 13 when the member 8 is in vertical position, as shown in solid lines in'Fig. 2, and the other adapted to be engaged by the detent 13 when the member 8 is swung outwardly to the dotted line position indicated at A in Fig. 2. When desired, the members 8 may be swung downwardly into substantially horizontal position so as to permit of the loose leaves being withdrawn and inserted horizontally. V
The features above described have all been protected by Letters Patent and are only novel in so far as they may cooperate with the locking mechanism on a hood 16. The. hood 16 has side walls'17, end walls 18 and a top 19. The overall length of thehood 16, is no greater than the overall length of the tray 6, so that the lower ends of the end walls 18 rest upon the upper faces of the tray end members 11; and the overall width of the hood 16 is slightly greater than the overall width of the tray 6, so that the side walls 17, which project below the level of the end walls 18, will embrace the tray end members 11', as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The locking mechanism is constructed. as follows: Movably mounted on the side walls 17 are members 20 which, in
this instance, are rotatably supported in bearings 21 which are secured in any suit- 9 able manner to the inner faces of the side members 17, there beingin this instance two bearings 21 for each of the members 20.
' The lower ends of the members 20 are bent to form horizontally extending legs 22, adapted, when the members 20 are turned to one position, to engage beneath the horizontal portions 23 of the members 8. When the members 20 are turned to another position, the legs 22 are withdrawn from beneath the members 23 and are positioned parallel with said members 23 along the. outer sides thereof.
Suitable means are provided to operate the members 20,- and for this purpose the stops.
upper ends of the members 20 are bent inwardly to form horizontally extending legs 24 which are engaged by the opposite ends of a pivotally mounted member 25, said member 25 turning on a tubular stud 26 which projects below the inner face of the hood top 19 and is secured in a hole 31 in said top. The opposite ends of the member 25, which is in the form of a bar, form downwardly projecting flanges 27 which are provided with slots 28 through which the horizontal legs 24 extend. The legs 24 sup port the member 25, thus preventing it from slip ing off of the stud 26.
Nfhvement of the member 25 in opposite directions is limited so as to prevent disen gagement of said member with the legs 24:. and this is accomplished as follows: The tubular stub 26 is provided with slots 29 through which extends a bar 30 adapted, when the member 25 is swung into the positions indicated in solid lines and in broken lines in Fig. 3, to engage the end walls of the slots 29, which end walls function as The bar 30 is secured at its opposite ends to the under face of the member 25 and extends across the middle or axis of the stud 26. Adapted to be inserted in the hole 31 and tubular stud26 is an operating member 32 which, in this instance, is in the form of a crank handle, the shaft portion 33 of said crankhandle being provided with a transverse slot 34 adapted, when the shaft 38 is inserted into the hole 31, to-engage the bar 30.
The construction and operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description but the operation may be briefly described as follows: Assuming, for example, that the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 2, and that the member 25 is in the solid line position shown in Fig. 3, to release the hood 16, the crank handle 32 will be turned counter-clockwise in Fig. 2, so as to turn the member 25 clockwise in Fig. 3 from the solid line position to the dotted line position, thus swinging the legs 22 from beneath the members 23, whereupon the hood 16 will be lifted off of the tray 6.
When it is desired to enclose the binder so as to prevent not only access of dust to said binder but to prevent unauthorized inspection of the contents of the binder and tampering therewith, the foregoing described operations will be performed in re verse order, so as to bring the legs 22 to rest beneath the members 23. The crank handle 32 will then be removed and placed in a suitable locked receptacle.
I claim:
1. A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray provided with guides at its opposite sides adapted to limit sidewise shifting of leaves in a binder mounted on the tray, a hood adapted to cover the tray, and means on the hood to releasably engage with the guides.
A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray provided at its opposite sides with inverted U-shaped members, a hood adapted to cover the tray, and means on the hood operable to and from position beneath the U-shaped member to hold the hood in place. 7
3. A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray,'a hood adapted to cover the tray, and cooperating means on the trayand hood including leaf guides on the tray to releasably secure the cover to the tray.
4. A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray, and a hood adapted to cover the tray, the lower ends of two of thehood walls adapted to rest on the tray and the lower ends of two other of the hood walls extending below the level of the first-mentioned walls and embracing the tray.
5. A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray, a hood adapted to cover the tray, and cooperating means on the tray and hood to releasably secure the cover to the tray, said means including guides on the tray operable into different positions for engagement by leaves in a binder mounted on the tray. r
6. A combined binder tray and cover comprising a tray provided with leaf guides, a hood adapted to cover the tray, a means on each of the two sides of the hood releasably connecting the hood with the leaf guides, and
means to simultaneously operate the last named means.
Signed at Los Angeles, California, this 29th day of April, 1926.
