This invention relates to garments. It is an object of this invention to provide an improved garment which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and efficient in use. Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved jacket having embodied therein a slidable closure or fastening device of the slide fastener type.

to provide a novel method or construction for securing the slidable fastener or closure, which is of the so-ealled interlocking or slide fastener type, in position upon a jacket and for substantially concealing the same. from view when the jacket is in use.

Still another object of the present invention is to construct the new jacket in such a manner that the same may be properly closed at the neck portion thereof without causing bulging of the garment or discomfort to the wearer.

Still another object of the invention is to construct the new jacket in such a manner that when the same is in wearing position on the person the outer flap portion thereof will overlap the inner flap portion thereof so as to entirely conceal the interlocking fastener, except for that part of the same which is disposed adjacent the neck of the jacket.

In the manufacture of jackets, such as are #0 commonly known as mackinaw jackets, and which are often used for sports wear, difficulty has been experienced in using a closure of the interlocking or slide fastener type because, among other reasons, of the fact that this type of gar-- 35 ment is, in itself, rather bulky when worn and no satisfactory method has heretofore been found,

in so far as I am aware, for securing a fastener of this type in place on the jacket in such a manner that it may be closed at the front with- 0 out causing bulging at the neck or discomfort to the wearer and in such a manner that the fastener will be entirely concealed from view when the garment is in use except for a small part of the same disposed at the neck of the jacket.

An additional object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a new and improved method for constructing the jacket in such a manner that the same will be free from the fore- 50 going and other objectionable features heretofore experienced in the manufacture and use of the prior art garments having a sliding fastener em bodied therein.

A preferred form of the new garment or jacket is shown in the drawings, is therein generally=indicated at It, and comprises a body H which is provided with arms i2 and a neckportion or collar E3. The jacket ill also includes an outer or left front flap or fold portion, which is generally indicated at it, and an inner or right front flap or fold portion which is generally indicated at ill.

Sewed into the fabric of the inner flap ii, that is, between the inner and outer plies thereof,

and along the margin it of the same, is one the jacket in a manner which will now be described.

As hereinbefore stated, one of the dlfliculties experienced in the use of fasteners of the interlocking type upon a jacket, of the general type illustrated in the drawings, has been the fact that these jackets, whicn are naturally quite full and bulky about the neck, due to the type of collar embodied in the same, and other factors, have a tendency to bulge at the neck and cause discomfort to the wearer when a fastener of the slider type is employed for closing the same. Another difiiculty experienced in the use of the slide-interlocking type of fastener in jackets of this type has been the fact that when the jacket is closed and the fastener locked the outer flap portion of the jacket has a tendency to roll back away from the inner flap of the jacket thereby exposing the fastener to view throughout its entire extent, that is, from the neck of the garment down to the end of the fastener, it being understood that when the front flap rolls back away from the inner flap the fastener can be exposed to view, which is an undesirable feature in garments of this or any other type.

In order to overcome the foregoing and other difficulties experienced in the manufacture and use of a jacket employing a sliding fastener,'I construct the outer or left flap l5 substantially as follows: To the inner side or ply of the outer jacket flap I4 I secure or stitch, as at 28, one marginal edge portion of a facing strip 2! and to this strip 2| I secure, by stitching 23, a substantially triangularly shaped but smaller facing strip 24 which is, in turn, sewed along its outer marginal edge, as'at 25, to the main ply 20 of the outer fold or flap ll of the jacket.

In eifect the facing strip 2! is substantially of triangular shape, as is the strip 23, regarding the offset or enlarged end portion 21 of the latter as the base of the triangle. Thus, the fastening strip I9 is disposed between the facing strip 2! and the strip 24-21 and is stitched to both of these strips by the stitching 23. In turn the two facing strips are each stitched (as at 28 and respectively) to the inner flap of the jacket. Moreover, the juncture between the apex portion of the facing 2i and the offset portion 2'! of the outermost or edgewise facing strip 24, is stitched laterally as at 48.

The complementary part IQ of the interlocking fastener is mounted in, and forms a part of, the smaller facing strip 24 (Fig. 3). Accordingly, when the jacket in is in use the left or outer flap portion l4 thereof may be folded over the inner or right flap portion l5 of the same, whereupon the slider l8 may be pulled up to the neck line of the garment, thereby latching the complementary interlocking parts I! and IQ of the fastener together, likewise latching the inner and outer flaps l5 and ll of the garment together, thus holding the jacket in closed or wearing position upon the person. When the jacket is thus closed and in wearing position on the person, the facing strip 24, being considerably wider at its lower end or base than it is near the neck line, (Fig. 2), will overlap the complementary parts l1-l9 of the fastener when the latter are thus latched together, thereby entirely concealing the fastener parts from view, except for a small part of the same near the neck line. The facing strip 24, being attached along its inner marginal edge, as at 23, to the facing strip 2|, has considerable freedom of movement relative to the main body or ply III of the outer flap H and hen e when the jacket is in wearing and closed position on the person, the outer or left flap I 4 will not roll back or pull away from the inner or right flap l5, as in the usual type of jacket. Hence the fastener is kept practically entirely concealed from view except for a small part of the same at the neck of the garment, and at the same time the discomfort and the other foregoing object onable features experienced in the manufacture and use of jackets with slide-interlocking fasteners are eliminated and a jacket is provided which is comfortable to the wearer and satisfactory to the garment trade.

Referring now more particularly to the modifled form of construction of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, the fastening part 2%, which part is substantially representative of that indicated at IT in Fig. 2, extends between the marginal portion 30 of the jacket and a concealing strip or flap ill.

The fastener part 32, substantially representative of the fastener part i9, is secured to the jacket in the same manner as the part 59, with the exception that the fastener part 32 extends along the marginal flap 33 of the jacket at a point substantially above the lower edge portion 34 thereof and a predetermined distance inwardly from the edge 35 of this frontal or marginal flap, and takes a course which curves inwardly from that edge 35 along a line a predetermined distance adjacent from and parallel with the fold line 36 of the lapel 31 of the jacket.

This lapel 31 is provided with a buttonhole 38 adapted to receive a button 39 when this lapel 31 is extended into the position illustrated in Fig. 6.

When the marginal or frontal portions of the jacket and the lapel 31 are disposed in the position illustrated in Fig. 6, it will be seen that no portion of the slide fastener structure is ex posed, thereby eliminating the otherwise unsightly shining or metallic portions of the fastener structure. This is due in one instance from the relative relation of the fastener parts with the jacket proper coupled with the cooperation of the marginal or frontal flap 3!! and the concealing flap 3!.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is susceptible of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A jacket comprising a body including an inner front flap and an outer front flap adapted to overlie the said inner front flap when the jacket is in use, and a slide fastener device for detachably attaching the said inner and outer front flaps together, said fastening device including complementary parts and one of the same being attached to the said inner flap and extending along the marginal edge thereof, the other of said complementary parts being attached to the said outer flap on the inner side thereof and extending at an acute angle relative to the marginal edge of the said outer flap from the neckline of the jacket downwardly to a point disposed above the bottom edge of said jacket, the lower end portion of said second-named complementary fastener part. being disposed inwardly from the said marginal edge of the said outer flap and the upper end portion of the said second-named fastener part being substantially coincidental with thesaid marginal edge of the saidjouter flap, a
