' 7 Claims. (01. 116-419) This invention relates to signaling devices for use on record sheets, sheets or pages of books, and in a card index, etc.
' The primary object 'of the invention is to pro- 5 vide a simple, low cost, easily operated signal I device, which is easily applicable to such record sheets, and which may be'readily movable into or out of signaling position, and having means thereon which may be manually manipulatedto 10 retain the device in its signaling position, in
such a manner so as to prevent its being accidentally returned to non-signaling position on the sheet.,
The device is in the nature of a' clip made 15 of relatively thin, soft material having sides formed thereon adapted to straddle a sheet and engage opposite faces thereof, and which sides are provided with means for perforating to pivotally secure the clip at an edge portion of the 20 sheet, and while secured, may be rocked from a non-signaling position to a signaling position.
.Referring. to the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a face view of a fragment of a record sheet, having my improved signaling 251 device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the device in signaling position on the record sheet and withthe lock means thereon engaging the edge of the sheet to retain the device against e: accidental movement.
Figure 3 is an enlarged edge View of Figure 1. Figure 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the signaling device preparatory to its being applied to a record sheet; and 35 Figure 5 shows the blank from which the device is made.
The blank illustrated in Figure 5 may be of any suitable material, but preferably of a material that may be, easily bent, and comprises a 40 body portion Ill and a pair of legs II and I2, divided by a gap I3, the end of which forms a shoulder I3a in the bo-dyportion Ill. The leg II is provided with a sharp extension I4 that is adapted to be formed at a right angle along the 45 dotted line I5, and the leg I2 is provided with an opening I6. The leg l2 has an integral outwardly extending ear II, the one edge I8 of which is aligned with the'shoulder I3a of the gap I3.
This blank is adapted to;be folded on the dotted 50 line law to the position shown in Figure 4, and,
when folded, the extension I4 of the leg II is adapted to cooperate with the opening I6 in the leg I2, and the shoulder I311. of the gap I3 and the edge I8 of the ear I! will be on opposite edges 55 of the clip.
As shown in Figure 4, when the clip islthus formed, it has a main body In comprising sides I9 and 20 that converge into a back wall 2|, so
that When'the clipis placed on a. record sheet or card 22, (Fig. 1), the back wall 2| thereof will 5 engage and be parallel with the edge 2241 thereof, and as a pressure is applied to the sides I 9 and 20, the extension I4 on the leg II will perforate the sheet or card and extend through the opening I6 in the leg I2. While in non-signaling po- 10 sitionon the record sheet or card, the sides I9 and 20 and the legs II and I2 of the clip Will frictionally engage opposite sides of the record sheet or card, and retain the same from movementthereon. The extension I4 forms a pivotal center for the clip, and on which center, it may be pivotally swung to signaling position, (Fig. 2) and when in this position, the shoulder I3a. of the gap I3 will engage the edge 22!]; of the record sheet or card and serves as a stop to limit the movement of the clip in one direction thereon.
When it is desired to swing the clip to signaling position so that the particular record sheet or card to which it is attached may be easily and. readily detected while stacked with others, 25
the ear I! of the clip may be bent slightly, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the edge I8 thereof will overlie and engage the edge 22d of the record sheet or card 22. When the clip is in this position on the record sheet or card, the edge I8 of the ear I! thereof serves with the shoulder I3a to lock the clip from swinging movements on its pivotal center formed by the extension I4. As the material used in making the clip is very soft, the ear I! thereof may be bent numerous times without breaking, and the clip may be readily detached from the sheet or card towhich it is attached by merely spreading the sides I9 and.
21 thereof to open position, (Fig. 4) and. then applying thesame to another sheet or cardin the manner as above described.
When the clip is to be permanently fixed for swinging movements on a sheet or card, the free end I 40. of the extension I4 on the leg Il, may be bent or cleated over the edge of the opening IS in the leg I2 after the clip is placed in position thereon. While permanently secured, the clip may be pivotally swung into signaling or non-signaling position at the will of the operator, and the ear I! thereon may be slightly bent when the clip is in signaling position and securely retains the same readily visible.
It will be seen that the clip when formed, has angularly disposed side walls I9 and 20, which facilitate attaching the same to a sheet or card,
as the clip may be easily placed thereon with the sides l9 and 20 thereof adapted to straddle the sheet, and it is the pressure applied to the sides l9 and 20 thereof that clinch the clip into position with the extension I4 thereof extending through the sheet or card. As the material used is very thin, it will be noted that when the clip is in non-signaling position on the sheet, the thickness of the back wall 2| thereof is the only portion of the clip that extends outwardly of the edge 22a of the sheet. The clip may be of various colors to indicate diiferent accounts, or of a color which will be easily and readily detected at a glance.
I contemplate as being included in these improvements all such changes, variations and departures from what is thus specifically illustrated and described, as fall within the scope'of the appended claims.
I claim:
