IMPROVEMENT IN PADS FOR HORSES FEET.

Specification forming part of ALetters Patent No. 209,245, dated October 22, 1878; application filed August 22, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL GALLAGHER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Snow- Pads and Frog-Pressures for Horses 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in Which-V Figure l is a longitudinal section of a hoof and my improvements illustratedv applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View. Fig. 3 is a perspective of my improvements.

The object of my invention is to provide a device for preventing the accumulation of snow or formation of snow-balls inside horses feet, or in the cavity which surrounds the frog and is bounded by the shoe, suchdevice being of such character that it can be readily applied and removed, and when in position will not be liable to loss or accidental disarrangement.

My invention consists of a pad having its lower or exposed surface com posed of enameled leather, said pad being provided with straps, arranged as hereinafter described, whereby it is rmly retained in position in the cavity inv side of a horses shoe.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a horses foot or hoof, and B a shoe thereon.

C is a pad, composed of several thicknesses of leather, the lower layer having its down- Ward face enameled, so as to present a smooth and slippery surface, to which snow will not adhere. Said pad is of .an outline conforming to the inside line, b, of the shoe B, so as-'to iit snugly inside and fill the cavity bounded by said shoe, and may be cut away, as at c, to accommodate the frog a.

D is a toe-strap secured to the front end of the pad C, and D is a heel-strap fastened to the rear end of said pad, and to a sheath or pocket-strap, E. F is a strap which passes through the sheath E, having at one of its ends a buckle, the. other extremity having holes f f', for the reception of the tongue of said buckle. G is a short looped or double strap, through which the strap F passes. Said strap Gr carries a buckle, g, for engagement with the toe-strap D. The strap F slides freely in thel sheath E, so as to bring the buckle f either in the front of or one side of the hoof, and also inthe loop of the strap G, so as `to permit the latter always to remain in line with the toe-strap D. A notch or opening, a', is made in the front part of the hoof A for the passage of the toe-strap D.

The operation is as follows: The toe-strap D is passed through the opening a and the pad C slipped into the cavity inside the shoe B. The straps D. and G' are now connected by means of the buckle .g and the strap F buckled around the foot. The device is now in position, and will remain there so long as the parts continue unbroken, there being no liability to loss or disarrangement by use or wear.

Said device forms a complete resistant to the formation of snow-balls in the horses feet, as the snow will not adhere to the enameled under surface of the pad C. It may be used, also, as a frog-presser, and, where a frogcooler is required, will serve that purpose too, a sponge or other like receptacle for the cooling lotion Abeing introduced between the frog and pad. l

What I claim as my invention is l. The flexible pad C, having its under or exposed surface enameled and adapted tot and fill the cavity in a horses foot or hoof, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the leather pad C, adapted to iit and fill the cavity of a horses foot, the strap D', sheath E, and buckle-straps F, D, and G, provided with buckles f g, substantially as shown and described.
