THlLL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,889, dated March 15, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER GRANT, of Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigamhave invented certain Improvements in Thill-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to that class of thill holders or tugs which are constructed of metal and provided with an inner packing or lining for preventing any undue wear on the thills.

The ordinary leather thill-holders are defective in that they are flexible, and when in use cling to or hug the thill, and thereby impose upon their supporting-straps a part of the strain intended for the holdbaok-straps, thus unduly wearing the former. This defect is overcome by making the thill-holder of metal or other rigid material, so that the thills may have free play through their holders and be accommodated to the movements of the horse. These rigid thill-holders are usually provided with linings of leather or other like material, to preserve the thills from injury.

The object of my invention is to provide thill-holders ofsuch construction that the lining or packing may be readily removed when worn and replaced by new lining.

The invention consists in the improved construction of thill-holder hereinafter fully described.

-In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the thill-holder without the lining. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the leather lining in place. Fig. 3 is a detail view,

showing the manner of connecting the twosections of the holder.

A represents one section of my improved t-hill-holder, the same being provided with the recess a, extending throughout its length, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2,) and a slightly enlarged head, a, to receive a buckle, S, for securing the holder to the strap 8 of the harness-saddle. The upper end of the section A is bent downwardly and provided with two perforated lugs, f f, which receive a tongue, at,

of the section B. This section is also recessed, as shown at a and is provided with the perforated tongue m, which fits between the lugs ff of the section A. A pin, m, connects the tongue :0 and the lugs f j, which form a hingejoint connecting the two sections A and B. It is evident that this connection may be varied or guards, between which is secured, by screws d or equivalent means, the strap E, to which the belly-band of the harness is secured.

F is the lining or packing, preferably of leather, which fits within the recessed portion of the two sections A and B, and having its ends protected within the enlarged portion a of the section A. When the lining F becomes worn, and it is desired to replace it with a new lining, the screws d are removed, when the sections A and B may be readily swung apart, the lining removed, and a new one inserted.

G is a slide or guard to receive the free end of the strap 8, and it may be cast in the same piece with the section A, or separate therefrom, as desired.

The improvement above described may be manufactured at a small cost, and it renders the renewal of the lining of the thill-holder a simple and easy matter.

I am aware that thill-holders have been provided with interior packing, and hence I make no broad claim to such construction.

My invention provides an improved construction, whereby the leather packing may be readily renewed.

Moreover,with my improvement short waste pieces of leather may be used, while in the construction heretofore employed, where the entire inner surface of the tug is'provided with packing, a continuous ring of leather is required.

I claim- A thill-holder'consisting of a section, A, having inner side flanges, an enlarged recessed head, a, and carrying a buckle and. lug, D, a section, B, hinged to the section A near the head a, and having inner side flanges, and a lug, D, and a leather packing, F, bent to fit within the sections, with its ends within the hollow head a, substantially as set forth.
