Description
W.'H. OAD'DY. Smoking-Pipe.
No. 208.886. Pateqted Oct. 15, I878.
J {A a I WITNESSES INVENTOR N. FEFERS, PHUm-LIYMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE;
XVILLIAM H. OADDY, OF BROOKLYN, NFAV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SM OKING-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,886, dated October 15, 1878; application filed Septei'nber 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. OADDY,of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side view of the improved pipe; Fig. 2, a bottom view of the same; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the bowl thereof; Fig. 4, a cr0ss-section of its stem.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in covering a clay, meerschaum, or other porous or fragile pipe with leather, or equivalent flexible material, which will fit around the pipebowl and stem, and not only will strengthen it and help preserve it from breaking, but, in case the stem becomes broken, will hold the parts together and allow the use of the pipe for an indefinite time thereafter nearly as well as if the stem were not broken.
I take an ordinary clay pipe, A, and fit around its bowl and stem a piece of leather, B, and secure it by cement-in g the edges thereof together, as at a, or the edges may be secured together by sewing; or the piece of leather may be secured upon the pipe by any other suitable means.
so closely that the pipe still serves for use,
and is nearly as good as an unbroken pipe.
This pipe is particularly valuable for seafaring men, miners, hunters, tourists, and others who are habitually away from where new pipes can be conveniently procured.
A similar covering may be used for cigarholders of fragile material.
What I claim as my invention, and desire I to secure by Letters Patent, is
A smoking-pipe covered with leather, or equivalent flexible material, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
VILLIAM H. OADDY. [L. s.]
lVitnesses FRED. HINCK, \VALTER P. PITCHER.
