BENJAMIN BOLEY, `OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR DEMIJOHNS OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,407, dated June 6, 1899. Application filed November 2, 1898. Serial No. 697,492. (No model.)
To rtZZ 107mm, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklym) in the countyof Kiugs'and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handles for Demijohns or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
By means of this invention handles can be connected .to the wicker-work of demijohns and like structures so as to prevent straining or tear of such work, as set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional View of a bottle withoutwicker-work. Fig. 2 shows the bottle with wicker-work.
A wicker or suitable 'receptacle is shown with a neck or upper portion at l 2 and a body or main portion at 2 3. A bottom piece is shown at fi and a handle at 5. A fastener or wire 6, secured to the bottom piece and connected to the handle, will cause the strain to be taken off the wicker-work, so as to prevent tearing of the latter. The strain of the handle being transferred to the bottom a will aid in keeping the latter in place.
The bottom piece is provided with one or more lateral perforations 7, and the fastener or wire 6 has its bottom or lower end 8 suitably secured to the bottom, as by being looped or bent through a perforation 7. Such fastener G is shown with its upper part 9 looped or secured about the neck portion l of theA wicker-work or directly under the top swell or mouth portion 10 of the bottle or vessel l1, inelosed in the wicker-work.
The handle 5, of suitable material, can be woven or looped to the wicker-work at l2 in the usual way, as' also looped or laid at la about the neck or mouth portion of the wicker-work or vessel; but said handle 5 being twisted about wire G any pull or strain on the handle will be transferred by the wire to the bottom 4. The wire being passed or extended along clear of or not attached to the wicker-work, no strain of the wire is transferred to such wicker-work, and by being inside the wicker-work or between the latter and the vessel such wire will be concealed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A receptacle comprising a bottom piece having radial perforations leading inwardly from its periphery, a handle, and a fastener formed separate therefrom having its lower terminal bent inwardly into one of said per forations and thereby secured to a side of the bottom piece, the said fastener being extended part way along within the receptacle and then passed through or out of the receptacle and through the handle and out of the latter and looped or secured about the neck of the receptacle, said fastener being kept entirely clear or detached from the body or side of the receptacle so as not to communicate strain from the fastener to such side, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN BOLEY.
