IMPROVEMENT lN QUILTING-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,577, dated October 1, 1878; application filed July 13, 1878.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I. BETTIE ELLIoTT, of Guntersville, in the county of Marshall and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Quilting Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a transverse section through line as w of my quilting-frame. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the frame raised at one end. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a detail, of the end.

The object of my invention is to furnish a quilting-frame which will afford the gr atest amount of surface on which the operators may work; and the. novelty consists in the construction, adaptation, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

Upon two slotted braced standards I support a frame capable of being tilt d in either direction, or folded up when not in use, and susceptible of ready and easy lemoval at will. This frame is composed of two end pieces and a shaft. Between the end pieces are three revolvin g rollers, each provided with radial pins or pegs upon one or both ends. These rollers are journaled in the end pieces, and are arranged one upon each side and one near the center of the frame. Each one is supplied with a strip of cloth or canvas tacked or otherwise properly secured thereto along its longitudinal surface, and to this strip is secured -the quilt when being quilted. Attached to the inner surfaces of the end pieces are leather straps, or other suitable similar devices, provided with holes to receive the radial pins or pegs on the rollers and hold the rollers in desired position.

Each roller may be provided with a lever to operate it, such lever being so situated near its end as not to interfere with the plane of the quilt when the same is applied to the rollers ready to be quilted.

The central roller acts as a feed-roller to the two outside rollers. The quilt is doubled near its center and wound upon this feed-roller. The sides or edges of the quilt are secured to the strip on the side rollers, and as the operators finish the work from the center reach the quilt is rolled upon the center roll.

Referring to the drawings, A A represent two-legged standards, each provided at its upper extremity with a cross-slot, a a, which slot furnishes bearing for the shaft aupon the tilting quilt-frame. To the standard A upon each side are pivoted holders M, which operate under the frame to hold it in a horizontal position.

B B represent the end pieces of the tilting removable frame, which hold the quilt, and B the rigid horizontal bar secured to each.

0 0 represent the/side rollers, provided with the usual strip to which to secure the edge of the quilt, and having radial pins 0 c, which operate through perforations din straps D, secured to one or both of the end pieces B B.

E represents the center roller, and-upon this roller the quilt is wound as the reaches are finished. It is similarlyprovided with radial pins 6, which operate in the strap D.

The advantages of my invention are that two sides are presented to ope ators, and at the same time but little space is required, as the center roll receives the quilt. The width is arranged to suit the working distance necessary for two persons facing each other. The

frame holding the quilt may be tilted in either direction to economize space, allowing it to be readily removed to the side of the room against the wall.

The frame and quilt may be readily removed from the standards and conveyed to any desired place at will.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The quilting-frame herein described, con sisting of the standards A A, having slots at a, the removable tilting frame B B, the feedroll E, the rolls 0 0, one on each side of said feed-roll. and provided with radial pegs c c, the straps, and the pivoted holders 00 all combined, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
