COMPACT BAG 'Filed May 8, 19:56 2 sheets-sheet 2 Patented May 4, 1937 PATENT OFFICE COMPACT BAG Alfred F. Reilly, North Attleboro, Mass., assignor to Evans Case Company, a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 8, 1936, Serial N0. 78,574
16 Claims.
My present invention relates to evening and afternoon bags and the like, and has particular reference to a novel construction of compact pouch or reticule.
5 Bags of standard type for evening and for afternoon wear are relatively large, and have compartments in which a compact, a handkerchief, a lipstick, coins, keys, and the like may be carried. These bags are quite bulky, and it is therel fore usual amongst the younger feminine set to either carry a small evening bag, or separate Vanities, coin and key containers, and the like,
which are taken care of by the escorts.
It is the principal object of my invention to l provide a small, convenient pouch or reticule which contains a complete compact and which also has space for a handkerchief, keys, coins and the like, and a foldingcomb if desired,
whereby there is no need for either carrying a small evening bag or separate containers.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a pouch which has a compact arrangement that facilitates quick and eifective use.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in View, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the novel bag;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the top being open;
Fig. 3 is an elevation detail showing the top in closed position;
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2, the vanity cover being in open position, parts being broken away;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, the rouge cover and the pow-der cover being in open position;
Fig. 6 is a side View, the top being open, with parts in section;
Fig. '7 is a plan view of the top base;
Fig. 8 is a side View thereof, parts being broken away;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the powder receptacle, the cover being broken away;
Fig. 10 is a section on the line illl0 of Fig. 9, the cover being open;
Fig. 11 is a plan view of the rouge container, the mirror lid being fragmentary, and in open position;
Fig. 1 2 is a section on the line l2-I2 of Fig. 1l;
Figs. 13 and 14 are respectively plan and side views, the side view being broken away, of the powdercontainer lock member;
Fig. l5 isa bottom plan view of Fig. 9; and
Fig. 16 is a section on the line lli-I6 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, the bag 2U includes a rim 2| to which a top 22 is hingedly connected, the rim 2| having a guard 23 within which a spring catch 24 secured to the top is adapted to enter and releasably engage the outer edge 25 of the ring. The rim, see Figs. 6 and 16, is U- shaped, with an annular support ring 26 locked between the sides of the rim and having a depending flange 21 with spaced openings 28 in which a spiral coil 29 is wound, a mesh pouch 30 and an inner textile liner 3| being secured to the spiral coil, whereby a flexible container is provided suitable for keys, coins, a handkerchief, a folding comb, and other similar articles.
The top 22 is essentially a complete compact; it comprises an outer portion 32 which may be gured, enamelled, plated, or otherwise ornamented, and an annular inner wall 33 which is secured to the outer portion 32 at its edge and diverges from the outer portion to provide a powder housing. A circular cup 34 is seated therein as hereinafter explained, and has an opening 3 5 in the base 36 to permit access to the powder, a cover 31 being hinged to the base as indicated at 38, and having a catch 39 cooperating with a latch opening 40 in the base, the cover having a finger tab 4I and being recessed as at 42 to receive a powder puff, the edge of which lits under the tab 4l. A closure 42 is provided for the cup 34, comprising an ornamented disk 43 which is hinged to the rim 44 of the cup 34, as indicated at 45, and has a spring latch 4S adapted to engage with a catch opening 41 in the rim 44, and also a finger tab 48. The closure includes a container 49 for a rouge cake, formed by mounting a U-shaped ring 50 thereto, and a lid 5l hinged to the ring edge as indicated at 52, the container being of sufficient depth to also accommodate a rouge pad if desired. The rouge cake has a metal plate backing, and is releasably held in place by the downwardly pointed inner edge of the ring and by a small finger 53. The lid 5I has a finger engageable tab 54, and is adapted to be releasably secured to the container, which has a spring catch for engaging the edge of the lid. The lid front is higly polished to function as a mirror.
The parts are stamped from sheet metal, whereby the cost of manufacture and of assernn bly is low. The cup 34 has an exterior locking member 5,6 of similar form, and has a flanging upper edge 5l against which the locking member seats, and tabs 58 which are bent over to hold the locking member in place, the locking member having snap detents 59 struck outwardly and spaced about its upper edge to lock beneath the edge 58 of the annular wall 33.
v.All the exposed parts may be suitably ornamented; the"annular wall 33 may have an impressed design, for example, and the closure disk may be similarly ornamented. 'I'he parts are readily assembled, thus reducing the cost of manufacture and repair.
It is thus evident that the novel construction is very compact and complete, comprising a ilexible bag adapted to hold small articles, including a handkerchief, and a cover which has powder and rouge containers and a mirror. f
While I have described a specific embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that the concept may be applied to diiTerent types of bags, that different materials may be used for the pouch and other parts, that the parts kmay be ornamented, enamelled, or plated in any desired manner, and that different arrangements of the containers may be made to suit the requirements for direrent designs, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
