4 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in an auxiliary air inlet adapted for use with internal combustion engines and intended as a means for providing an additional supply of air as the speed of the engine is increased.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, durable and highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be easily and quick 7 1y installed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device which will be light and compact.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which,

In the drawing I have illustrated the invention used with an engine having an intake manifold l2 attached to which is a carbureter l3. The invention is interposed between the carbureter I3 and the manifold I2 and is made embracing the inner plate l5 and being welded, soldered or otherwise suitably secured thereto. Each of these is provided with a pair of openings 6 which register with the openings in the intake manifolds of a well known make of automobile in which each of the openings I6 is provided for four cylinders, thus providing a device which will serve an eight cylinder car. Formed through each of these plates are the openings I! through which may be projected the bolts which serve to bind the device and the carbureter to the intake manifold l2. A back or holder I8 is formed which is slotted on its forward side as at I9 and in which the tongues and 2| formed on the plates engage, these tongues b ii g soldered or preferably from three plates, the outer plates M otherwise suitably secured in the holder Hi. This holder I8 is provided with a nipple 22 which projects centrally outwardly therefrom and through which is formed the bore 23. This bore terminates in communication with the recess 24 formed 5 in the outer plates and with the passages 25 and 26 formed in the central. plate. Each of these passages 25 and 26 communicates with the openings I6. Threaded on the nipple 22 is a fitting 21 having a passage 28 formed therein communicating with the narrower passage 29 which communicates with the bore 23. Slidably mounted in the passage 28 is the valve stem 30 carrying the valve head 3| at its inner end. A spring 32 embraces the stem 3!] and one end of 15 this spring engages the head 3| and the other engages the cap 33 which is threaded on the end of the fitting 21. The end of the rod 33 is provided with a spring 32 whereby it may be attached to the accelerator pedal rod 35. This spring 32 normally maintains the head 3| seated in position to close the passage 29. However, when the accelerator is pressed to feed fuel to the engine, the head 3| will be drawn outwardly against the compression of the spring 32 and. thus permit air to enter through the pipe 34, this pipe 34 being threaded into the fitting 21 so as to communicate with the bore 28. Communicating with the pipe 34 is a tubular conduit 35 which may be extended and secured about either pipe to the engine or at any other desirable location where air may be present.
It is obvious, therefore, that when the engine is running and the accelerator is pressed down to feed more fuel to the engine, as the engine is 3r speeded up, air will pass through the pipe 34 into the intake manifold and thus auxiliary air is provided.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of construction in which the inner plate 36 is slotted as at 38 and clamped between the outer plates 39 and 40. In each of the plates is the registering openings 4| and the openings 42 are also formed through each of these plates. The plates are secured to the holder 8 in the manner already described for the construction shown in Fig. 1 and the fitting 21 is equipped as shown in Fig. 1. The use and operation of the invention is exactly the same as shown in Fig. 1, the modified form being intended for use on a slightly diiferent type of engine.
It is believed obvious that the device may be economically manufactured as its main body consists of three plates which may be stamped out, the outer plates being duplicates of each other. 55
The ease and facility with which it may be installed is also believed apparent and experience has shown that the use of such a device will result in considerable saving of fuel in the operation 5 of the engine.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of outer plates, each engaging opposite faces of an inner plate, each of said plates having an opening formed therein, said openings registering with each other and being adapted for communicating with an intake manifold with which used, said inner plate having a slot projecting inwardly frcm one edge and communicating with the opening formed therein, said outer plates covering said slot to form therewith a passage; and a holder having a groove formed in one of its faces for reception of one of the edges of said plates, said holder having a passage formed therein communicating with the slot formed in said inner plate.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of outer plates, each engaging opposite faces of an inner plate, each of said plates having an opening formed therein, said openings registering with each other and being adapted for communicating "with an intake manifold with which used, said inner plate having a slot projecting inwardly from one edge and communicating with the opening formed therein, said outer plates covering said slot to form therewith a passage; .a holder having a groove formed in one of its faces for reception of one of the edges of said plates, said holder having a passage formed therein communicating with the slot formed in said inner plate and having its axis in a plane parallel to the plane of said plates; and a threaded nipple projecting outwardly from said holder in communication with said slot and having its axis in a plane parallel to the plane of said plates.

In a device of the class described, a pair of outer plates engaging opposite faces of an inner plate, there being a plurality of openings formed in each of said plates, the corresponding openings in each of said plates registering with each other, said inner plate having, extending inward ly from one edge, slots communicating with the openings formed therein and said outer plates serving as covers for said slots to provide there with passages; a holder fixedly embracing the edges of said plates at the slotted edge of said inner plate and having a passage formed therethrough communicating with said slots and axially parallel to the plane :of said plates.
4. In a device of the class described, a pair of outer plates engaging opposite faces of an inner plate, each of said plates having openings formed therein, corresponding openings of said plates registering with each other and being adapted for positioning in communication with an intake manifold with which used, said inner plate having slots formed therein extending inwardly from one edge and communicating with the openings formed therein, said outer plates covering said slots and said outer plates being notched at their edges corresponding to the slotted edge of said inner plate; and a holder fixedly embracing said edges of said plates and having a passage formed therethrough communicating with said slots.
