Description

A. C. BUTTS. Boxing-Glove.
No. 207,591 Pat'nted Sept. 3,1878;
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. O C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUSTIN O. BUTTS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXING-GLOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,591, dated September 3, 1878; application filed January ll, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, AUsTIN CHARLES Rows, of the .city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new Improvement in Boxing and Fencing Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the 0011- struction and operation of the same.
My invention is a boxing-glove constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to avoid the difficulties in the ordinary mode of manufacture and produce a more effective article.
In the drawing, Figure l is a view showing the form of the pieces from which the glove is made; Fig. 2, a section of the completed glove, and Figs. 3 to 5 sections illustrating the process of manufacture.
A is the palm, and B the back, each cut from a single piece of leather, and U C are the thumb-pieces, the edge a of each being stitched to the edge I) of the palm or back piece. In the back piece are three slits, c, and to the inner side of the palm are stitched three fourchettes, I), each consisting of a strip of leather forked at one end, pointed at the other, and stitched along a central line, ac, coinciding with one of the slits c.
The forked ends of each fourchette are brought together and stitched, an d the sides are folded closely together, as shown in Fig. 4, and the double edge is passed between the edges of the slit 0, and there secured by stitches y, as shown in Fig. 5. The corresponding edges of the pieces 0 U A B are then sewed together, forming the glove proper with a flat plain palm, a fiat back having slight ribs, and finger-receptacles separated by the fourchettepartitions D. To the edges of this glove is sewed the covering E of the buffer.
By the construction above described the necessity of making any slit or gore in the. palmpiece for the insertion of the thumb-pieces or for sewing finger-pieces is avoided, while a nice fit in the finger-receptacles and a smooth uniform surface to the palm are obtained.
By stitching and folding the fourchettes and inserting and sewing the edges between the turned-up edges of the back B the stitches are completely covered, so that they are not exposed to perspiration or rotted, while much greater durability is secured with but little stitching, and that of a character easily effected by unskilled workmen.
I claim- 1. In a boxing-glove, the combination of the pieces A B and thumb-pieces C O, constructed as shown, and having straight edges a united to corresponding edges 1) of the pieces A B, as set forth.
2. Ihe combination, in a boxing-glove, of a single piece, A, forming the palm, a single piece, B, with slits c, constituting the back, and pieces D, stitched to the palm-piece, and extending through the slits in the back and stitched thereto, as described.
3. 'lhcpieces D, sewed to the piece A, doubled to conceal the stitching, and sewed between the turned-up edges of the piece B, as set forth.
AUSTIN CHAS. BUTTS.
