T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that ll, VILLIAM A. RUDDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park inthe county of Monmouth and State of blew Jersey, have invented cern tain new and useful Improvements in Glove Patterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment patterns and more especiallyr to an improved pattern assemblage by the use of which gloves and other hand coverings maybe accurately cut from any desired and suitable material and the component parts assembled and united without the exercise of any particular skill, so that one supplied with the pattern may produce any desired number of gloves for personal use or may engage in the manufacture of gloves on a commercial basis.
Another object of the invention is to produce a pattern assemblage in which the component parts will bear a novel arrangement of symbols indicating the mannerin which blanks cut by the aid of the pattern parts are to be assembled and united to produce the completed glove or other hand covering.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the main or body pattern part of the assemblage; n
Figure 2 is a plan view of the thumb part of the pattern assemblage;
Figure 3 is a group view illustrating in plan pattern parts which bear relation to the first finger, second finger and little linger;
Figure l is a plan view of the pattern part` to be employed in producing ,a blank for gauntlet culi' 5 Figure 5 is a similar view illustrating an-v other patternpart for producing a gauntlet cuff blank;
Figure 6 is a plan view illustrating a pattern part for the production of a wrist blank; y y
Figure 7 is asimilar View illustrating another pattern part for the production of a wrist blank;
Figure 8 is a plan View illustrating a pattern part for the production of a sleeve protector blankk to be employed in connection with the hand covering proper.
rlhe pattern assemblage illustrated in the drawings is designed for use 'in cutting out a plurality of blanks, from any desired inaterial, which blanks are to be united kto produce "a hand covering of theglove type but it will be understood, particularly' after a consideration of the specific description of this embodiment of the invention whichy is to follow, that the principles of the invention may be carried out in the production of mittens,l gloves havingl component parts or contours other than those indicated by the contours of the pattern parts shown in the drawings, and in fact hand coverings of any and all designs and regardless of the use to which they are to be put.
ln the drawings, the main pattern part, which is illustrated in Figure 1, is indicated in general by the numeral 1, and it like all ofthe other pattern parts illustrated in the other gures of the drawings, may be formed from paper or any other sheet material which it is found desirable to employ. rlhe main pattern part 1 comprises a palm portion 2, an index finger portion 3, a first finger portion 4, a second finger por-` tionk 5, a little finger portion 6, and a thumb portion y7, the rfinger ortions 4C, 5 and 6 being integrally joinek with the upper part of the palm portion 2 and being mutually separatedy by incisions 8 and 9. The first finger portion lis likewise separated from the index finger by an incision 10. Thefinger` portions 4 5 and tirare of a marginal. contour and dimensions to provide, in the blank cut from the pattern 1, a covering for the inner sides of the first, second and little fingers. The index finger portion 3 on the otherhand is of a width such that the blank part corresponding thereto, when properly folded and marginally stitched, will provide the complete stallv for the index finger, this index finger portion 3 at its i upper margin being scalloped at an intermediate point, as indicated by the numeral 11, so that the rounded marginal portions 12' and 13 lying at opposite sides of the scallop, will define the contour of the tip of the index linger when'the blank cut from the patterny is properly stitched. That lateral margin of the pattern part 1 which defines oneboundary of the index linger portionl,
is cut in as indicatedat 14 substantially atv a point corresponding to the Lbase of the index finger'below which portion the margin is straight as indicated by the numeral r15. The lower portion ofthe pattern part 1 corresponds to the wrist line of a `blank cut therefrom, as indicated by the numeral 16, and the thumb portion 7 is defined by incisions 17 and 18 which `extend inwardly from the margin 16 along lines curving toward each other, the inner end of the incision 17 being located approximately vertically in alinement below the inner end of the incision 10, and the inner end ol the incision 18 being located approximately 1n vertical alinement below the scallop 11. Likewise the inner ends or" the incisions 17 and 18 terminate adjacent the transverse median line of the palm portion 2 of the pattern partl. The other lateral margin of the pattern part 1, which is indicated by the numeral 19, is straight and parallel to the margin 15 and defines one lateral edge of the palm portion 2 and one lateral edge of the little linger portion 6.
As heretofore stated the invention comtemplates providing the pattern parts with indicating symbols so arranged as to indicate the precise manner in which the blanks cut by the aid of these parts are to be assembled and stitched together. Thus in the case of the pattern part 1, symbols comprising the letters of the alphabet are printed or otherwise marked upon one or both faces of the said pattern part and by reference to Figure 1 it will be observed that the letter A is located upon the tace or' the palm portion 2 near the wrist line 16 and at one side oi' and close to the point where the incision 18 opens through the said wrist line or margin, this reference character, being the first letter in the alphabet, indicating the starting point for the stitching operation, and pre1- erably there is printed upon the tace of the blank in juxtaposition to the letter allegend such for example as Start to sew here, as indicated by the numeral 20. The letter B is located at the inner end of the incision 18, C at the tip end of the thumb portion 7, l) at the inner end of the incision 17, and E at one sideot and adjacent to the point where the incision 17 opens through the margin 16. The letter F is repeated at intervals upon 'the tace or .the pattern part 1 along the margin 15 and incut margin la, and the letter l is repeated at intervals along the margin 19. The letter J is repeated upon the face of the blank at intervals along the curved marginal portions 12 and 13 and at the point of the scallop of the index ringer 3, and the letters L, N and O are located at the tips of the iinger portions a, 5 and 6 respectvely.
The index iinger portion 3, and the i'irst, second and little finger portions 4l, 5 and 6, are indicated individually by appropriate legends, as is also the thumb portion 7, suitably identigtying these portions of the pattern part. s
The pattern part shown in Figure 1 may be employed, in conjunction with other pattern parts to be presently described, in cutting out the blanks which are to comprise a glove having a closed wrist but in order to adapt the pattern part 1 'for use where a glove is to be produced with an open wrist designed to be closed by one ot more buttons or clasps, there is printed or otherwise indi cated, as at 21, upon the tace ot the pattern 1, a line 21 along which an incision may be made in the palm portion of the blank being cut extending inwardly from the wrist line or margin 16, and the said palm portion of the pattern part may bear, in juxtaposition to this line, any appropriate legend such lfor example as Only cut or sew at this line when button or clasp gloves are desired.7
Figure 2 oit the drawings illustrates in plan a pattern part which is indicated by the numeral 22 and which is to be employed in cutting out a blank which when assembled with and united to the blank cut by the use ot the pattern part 1, will complete the thumb stall oi the glove or other hand covering and close the opening vacated by the part oi the second-mentioncd blank corresponding to the thumb portion 7 or the pattern 1. The pattern part 22 has a basal marginal portion 23 which is straight and the pattern part has other lateral marginal portions 24 and 2 5 which extend 'from the ends of the marginal portion along diverging lines to a point approximately at the transverse middle or the pattern part 22 where they join other marginal portions 26 and 27 respectively which latter converge and are joined at their relatively adjacent ends by a curved marginal portion 2S defining the tip ci the thumb blank to be cut, the curvature et this tip corresponding to the curvature ot the tip otl the thumb portion 7 of the pattern part 1. Symbols are printed upon the tace ot the pattern part 22 preferably in the following order: rll`he letter A at the juncture of the marginal portions 23 and 2st; the letter .l at the juncture ot the marginal portions 21 and 26; the letter C in juxtaposition to the marginal portion.y 23; the letter D at the juncture of the marginal. portions and 27; and, the letter E at the juncture et the marginal portions 23 and Figure 3 ot the drawings illustrates three other pattern partsrepresentative of the first linger, second iinger, and little linger, and indicated respectively by the numerals 29, 30 and 31 and each bearing a suitable indicating legend. The pattern part 2S) represents the first linger and which is a companion part to the portion 4 of the pattern part 1, and comprises a relatively broad upper portion 32 and a relatively narrow lower portion 33, the portion 32 at its tip having a curvilinear margin 34, and the lateral margins or edges of the pattern part as a whole being cut in along curved lines, as at 35, at the juncture or the portions 32 and 33. The portion 32 is of a length substantially equivalent to the portion 4 ot the pattern part 1 'but is broader than said portion,y and the portion 33 is of a length substan-v tially equivalent to the distance between the base of the portion 4 and the wrist line or lower margin 16 of the said pattern part 1. The pattern part 297 like the pattern parts 1 and 22, is provided with designating symbols preferably as ollowst- The letter F is repeated at intervals along one lateral margin oi' the portion 33 from the lower end of the said portion to its juncture with the portion 32; the letter Gr is repeated at intervals in the like manner and for a like distance along the other lateral margin of the portion 33 g and7 the letter L is located at the tip ot' the portion 32 in juxtaposition to the margin 34. n rlhe pattern part 30 is verysimilar inits marginal contour to the pattern part 29 and comprises a relatively broad upper portion v36 and a narrow lower portion 37 the lateral margins of the pattern part being cut in at the juncture oi' the` portions 36 and 37, along curved lines, as indicated bythe numerals 38 and 397 the curvilinear mar inal portion 38 extending to Substantially t e same distance above the lower end of the portion 37 as the marginal portions 35 of the pattern part 29, and themarginal portions 39 terminating at a lower point. v
The pattern part 30 bears upon its face guiding symbols preferably as follows:- The letter G is repeated'at intervals along that lateral margin of the blank of which the portion 38 constitutes a part and from the lower end of the blank to the juncture of the parts 36 and 37 the letter H is similarly repeated at intervals along the opposite margin of the blank; and, the letter N is located in juxtaposition to the tip of the portion 36. The pattern part 31 comprises an upper relatively broad portion 40 and a narrow lower portion 41, one lateral edge ot this pattern part being substantially straight throughout its entire length and indicated by the numeral 42 andthe other lateral edge being cut in along a curved line, as at 43, at the juncture of the portions 40 and k41 and to a degree and in a locationcor-responding to the cut in edge portion 39 of the pattern partk30. On this pattern part the letter H is repeated at intervals along the last-men.- tioned lateral margin of the part from the lower end of the portion 41 to the upper' end of the cut in marginal portion 43; the
letter I is repeated at intervals throughout the entire length of the straight margin 42; and, the letter O is located in juxtaposition to the tip of the portion 40, the tip of this portion as well as that of the portion36 of the part 30 being of curvilinear form. The pattern parts 30 and 31 respectively constitute companion parts for the portions 5 and 6 of thepattern part 17 and likethe pattern j part 29 andits associated portion 4, the broader upper portions of the said pattern parts 30 and 31 correspond in length substantially to the length of the respective portions 5 and 6, their lower portions being ofalength substantially equalfto the distance between the lower ends of the portions 5 and 6 of the pattern part 1 and the margin 16 of said part. j
In the use otthose parts of the pattern assemblage which have been ythus far described, blanks are cut by the aid of these parts, in any convenient manner, from the material of whicitythe giove or other hand covering is to beomad'e; and aiterthe blanks have been cut they are united ina manner which will nowbe explained, and for the sake of convenience reference will be had to the blanks as though they bear the designating letterspeculiar to the pattern parts by the aid of which they were cut. The
thumb portion `oiz the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part lis folded back on a line extending between thepoints D and B, and the thumbk blank out by the aid of the pattern part 22 is then associated with the iirst-mentioned blank in a position inverted with relation to the position of ythe pattern part 22 illustrated in Figure 2 and with the corners adjacent theyletters A upon the two blanks in registration, and stitching is run along the margins of the blanks from the point A to the point B. yNext the blank corresponding to the pattern Lpart 22 is united to the' margin of the -thumb portion of the blank corresponding to the thumb portion of the pattern part 1 along the marginal line indicated successively by the letters B, C and l), andfinally the blanks are stitched together yalong the marginal line from D to SE. Thus the space vacated by the thumb `portion of the blank cut by the aid of the pattern. part 1 is closed and the thumb stall is completed. The blank cut by the aid ot the pattern part 1 is ,then
overturned along vthe line extending substantially from Athe scallop 11 to the inner end ot the incision 18, and the curvilinear v Athe blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 29 is applied to the partly finished article by bringing the marginal portion thereof deiined by the letters l? into registration with the marginal portion 15 defined yby the corresponding letters, and a line of stitcln ing is run along these marginal portions. Also the upper portion 32 of theblank cut the line of they by the aid of the part 29 is united from F kto L and :from L to Gr marginally to the portion 4 of the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part l. Next, the blank cut by the aid ofthe part 30 is assembled with and united along the marginal portion indicated by the letters G to the corresponding marginal portion of the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 29, andthe blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 30 is then united from G toN and from N to H marginally to the part 5 of the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part l. Next, the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 3l is united along the marginal portion designated by the letters H to the corresponding marginal` portion of the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 39 and similarly united marginally from H to O and from O to I and throughout the margin 42 ot the portion 6 and the margin 19 A ot the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part l.
lt the hand covering is to have a closed wrist, it is completed by the method of procedure above outlined except for the provision of a wrist or entiq portion. It it is to be open and adapted to be closed by buttons or clasps, then an incision is made along the line 2l ot the blank cut by the aid of the pattern part 1, the edges of the incision are suitably linished, and the buttons or clasps are applied. Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 illustrate various pattern parts 'from which wrist bands or cuffs may be prepared. For es:- ample Figure 4 illustrates a pattern part designated in general by the numeral 44 and by the use of which two blanks are to be cnt which blanks may be stitched together along either lateral edge 45 and then united along the curvilinear lower edge 46 to the marginal portion 16 ot the partly completed glove prepared as above described. lThe pattern part 44 may be provided with a suitable identifying legend, and directions 4T Jfor its use may be printed upon either or both sides thereof. Also a suitable legend 48, as tor example Attach to glove here77 may be printed adjacent the margin 46, and .instructions as to seaming or over-edging may be printed' adjacent the opposite margin. A different type of gauntlet cuff pattern part is illustrated in Figure 5 and indicated in general by the numeral 49 and as will be evidenced by a reference to'said gure, bears legends and instructions similar to those upon the pattern part 4. A wrist band pattern part is illustrated in Figure G and indicated in general by the numeral 50 and likewise bears printed instructions and legends similar to those upon the pattern parts 44 and 49. Also this pattern part 50 may be printed with an incision indicating line 51 accompanied by suitable instructions or a legend, indicating the point at whichthe incision is to be made in the blank cut from the part, and a but ton or clasp is to be employed. As the use of the blanks cut by the aid ot the pattern parts 44, 49 50 and 52 is obvious, it is thought that 'further description is unnecessary.
It will be understood that the lower portion vof the part 3 and the lower portions 33, 37 and 4l of the pattern parts 29, 8O and 31 are to yconstitute the back of the hand covering in the blanks eut by the aid ot these parts.
vFigure 8 orp the drawings illustrates one of a pair of pattern parts, indicated by the numeral 53, which is to be employed in cuttingl blanks from which a sleeve protector is to be produced, this protector being employed in connection with the hand covering proper by being united at one end to the wrist por tion of the said covering as will be readily understood. This pattern part 53 comprises a relatively broad upperfportion 54 and a narrower lower end portion 55, the pattern part having a straight longitudinal edge 5G, upper and lower end edges 57 and 58 respectively which extend at right angles to the edge 56 and are straight, and another lengt tudinal or lateral edge which is indicated by the numeral 59 and which is extended diagonally with relation to the other edges oit the blank and slightly curved throughout its length. Upon its face the pattern part will bear, near the edge 58, a suitable legend indicating that this edge portion is to be united to the glove or other hand covering, this legend being indicated by the numeral 60. In like manner the pattern part bears upon its face, near its edge 57, a legend 6l indicating the mannerin which this edge portion ot the corresponding blank cutfro'm the pattern is to be finished and provided with a closing means whereby it may be held about the forearm of the wearer ot the hand covering.
Other directions or legends as indicated by the numerals 62 and 63 iay likewise be printed upon the face ot the pattern part near the edges 5,6 and 59 respectively.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is y 1. A glove pattern comprising a plurality oit parts having the marginal contours of the component blank members of the glove which they represent and provided at inten vals adjacent their ,margins with symbols having an establishedsequence yand indicagins with symbols indicative of the manner in Which members eut by the aid of the pattern parts are to be assembled and their margins progressively united to complete the hand covering.
3. A pattern for a hand covering comprising a plurality of parts having the marginal contours of the Component members of the hand covering which they represent, the parts being provided marginally at predetermined polnts with corresponding symbols having an established known sequence and therefore indicative of the manner in which the members cut by the aid of' the pattern parts are to be assembled and their margins progressively united to Complete the hand covering.
4. A pattern for a hand covering comprising a plurality of parts having the marginal contours of the component members of the hand covering which they represent, one of said pattern parts representing the index finger stall complete, the palm portion of the hand covering, and portions of the thumb, rst finger, second finger and little finger stalls, and other pattern parts representing the other portions of the thumb, first linger, second finger and little finger stalls.
5. A pattern for a hand covering eomprising a plurality of parts having the marginal contours of the component members of the hand covering which they represent, one 'of said pattern parts representing the index finger stall complete, the palm portionof the band covering, and portions of the thumb, first finger, second finger and little finger stalls, and other pattern parts representing the other portions of the thumb, first finger, second finger and little nger stalls, the first-mentioned pat-tern part having an indicated incision extending from its Wrist line to indicate Where an incision is to be made in the Wrist portion of the completed article if the same is to be of the open-wrist type.
In testimony whereof I ai'iix my signature.
