Description

UNITED STATES] PATENT OEEIcEo RUFUS COOK, CF WEST NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specilleation forming part of Letters Patent N0. 207,016, dated August 13, 1878; application filed July 6, 1878.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS COOK, of l/Vest l Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State the following is a full, clear, and exact de` scription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speeilication, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved garbage or swill holder. Fig. 2 is also a side view, showing the holder proper tilted and its cover elevated; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken near the lower end or bottom of the holder.
Corresponding parts in the several iigures are denoted by like letters.
This invention appertains to certain im provements in sanitary garbage-holders conveniently adapted for use in connection with private residences, boarding-houses, and hotels 3 and it consists of a receptacle or vesselI hung or trunnioned i n an upright or4 other suitable support, with its cover hinged or pivoted to thc support or frame, and provided with means for retaining it in its normal or upright position and limiting its downward movement when tilted, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A is an upright frame or other suitable support, upon which the holder or receptacle B is hung by means of the arms or trunnions Z) I), which, if desired, maybe caused to pass through plates c c on the sides of the receptacle B, where they are fastened to the latter, one of which plates is provided at its upper end with a right-angled projection, d, and extended downwardly, and pro vided at its other end with a second similar projection, d', the function of which will appear hereinafter.
The receptacle or holder B is provided with a cover 0r lid, c, hinged to a vertical arm or extension, e', of the support A, which extension is beveled or tapered ol away from thc receptacle, to permit of its cover e, when removed therefrom, resting in an outwardly-inclined position and upon the said extension, to hold it in position when thus removed, as seen in Fig. 2.
Upon the inner side of one of the supports A, near its upper end, is a block or stop, f, and at a point lower down upon said support is a second block or stop, g. l1. is a spring holding lever, the inner end, h', of which extends downwardly, so as to be easily or conveniently reached by the hand or inger, seen in Fig. l, and extends in proximityl with the projection d upon the lower end of the receptacle B, the projection d extending to a ypoint contiguous to the stop g, or directly in contact with the latter.
By this arrangement it will be observed that the receptacle or holder B is held in its normal or upright position, and that, by moving the inner end, h', of the spring-holding lever h laterally or toward the`operator, thc holder will be free to be tilted after first lit'ting the cover e therefrom.
In tilting the receptacle or holder IE its downward movement islimited by the projection d thereon striking the stop j' on the support A, to hold it in its tilted position while its contents are being emptied. When the holder is returned to its normal position it will be seen that the spring-lever h It will automatically yield and permit of the passage of the projection d' upon the lower end of the holder, and, after the passage of said projection, lock the latter in position, and thus secure the holder in place. A piece of sponge or cloth saturated with a deodorizer, or a vessel illed with thelatter, may be secure-d or hung in the ring or bracket j depending from,
the inside of the cover e to counteract the noxious gas generated by the decomposition of the contents of the holder or receptacle.
The exterior of the receptacleor holder IB 4 may be painted or coated tore'sist the action of acids and the weather, 'To the lower end of the holder may ber attaclied'a handlefor convenience in tilting' it. ,r
Having thus fullydcscribeifl my invention, I claim and desire to`.sccure,/ by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the supports or frame A, having the stapt g and lever h It', of
the receptacle B, hung or trunnioned upon sind frame and provided with the projection d', substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The frznne or support A, to :Ln upright extension, e', of which is hinged or pivoted the cover or lid e, in combination with the receptacle or holder B, hun g upon said frame or support, substantially as shown :md described, for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed lny signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUFUS COOK.
Titnesses THOMAS F. NUTTER, EDWARD L. GOODWIN.
