VBe it known that I, TWILLIAM SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Olean, in .the county of Cattaraugus and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary or Hygienic Cuspidors,` of which the following is a specication. l

This invention relates to certain improvements in sanitary or hygienic cuspidors, the construction thereof embodying a base which serves as a container for the cuspidor, a pivoted closure for the container, a hollow column that is attached to the container or base, and manually actuated means for raising and lowering the cover which are constructed and associated to conceal the connec-tions between the base and its cover, a part of the actuating means including a lever and a link which are movable between the side walls of a kerf formed through the rear portion of the base, as will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a covered container for acuspidor with a single hinge connection which comprises a base provided with a kerf, a lever which is attached to the cover said lever having to one side of its fulcrum or pintle a rearwardly and downwardly extending portion that is housed between the side walls of the kerf, a curved link for connecting the lever with a rod, so that the rod when manually depressed will swing the cover upward, the kerf in the base guiding the lever and preventing lateral movement of the cover, also clearing the kerf when the cover is raised of any material which might accumulate therein and sweeping the same into the container.

The device'is of primary importance in connection with hospitals, although it is desirable as well in private houses or in public places.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter moreV fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation with the cover open; and

There are plates 21 secured to the casing, one on each side of a recess 21a and a pintle 21b is supported by the plates and consti tutes a fulcrum for the arm 18 so that the arm may oscillate and carry the cover to an open or closed position as the operating rod is lifted.

The cover for the base has associated with its under surface a guard, as shown by Fig. 2, for the purpose set forth, also incidentally to prevent powder linding its way into the kerf like recess, and should any material accumulate therein it will he .ejected by the arm When the cover is raised.

From an inspectionof the drawintgr and from the foregoing description, it will be apparent that if the handle 16 is pressed down, the operating rod will communicate `motion to the cover and lift it so that access to the interior of the cuspidor may be had Whereas upon releasing the handle, the cover will be returned to its closed position by gravity. y

The cabinet will be of utility for holding medicines or for other uses and the tray may be used for matches, ashes and the like.

The combination with a cuspidor, of a container for the cuspidor, said container havin a rear portion of greater thickness than tie sides and front, a kerf formed vertically throughsaid rear portion, a hollow post attached to the container, a cove-r for the container, a member attached to the cover and provided with a pintle for en- `gagement with the container and beyond the pintle with an arm that extends downwardly and rearwardly between the vertical side walls of the kerf, a rod maintained :for reciprocation by the hollow post, and a curved link connected to the lower end of the arm and to the lower end of the rod.V
