It is an'object of this invention to provide an improved collar stay which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and efliclent in Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved collar stay for holding the wings of soft collars in place.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved collar stay of the adjustable type for holding the wings of soft collars, of various lengths, in proper wearing position.

The collar stay l also includes a pair of legs, each of which isgenerally indicated at l3, and each of these legs I 3 includes an upper leg section It and a lower leg section l8. Each of the upper leg sections I6 includes a pair of spaced and substantially parallel portions li and 28 and each of the bends I2 terminates in or merges into the portion 28 of the corresponding upper leg section IS. The portion 28 of each of the upper leg sections I6 is bent back upon itself, at its lower end, in an offset U-shaped formation or return bend. as at I, (Figs. 3 and 4), thus providing the corresponding portion l5 and the upper end por; tion ll of each of the leg portions I5 is bent or coiled around the corresponding leg portion 28' where the latter merges into the corresponding U-shaped bend i2 (Fig. 3). Slidably positioned between the parallel portions l5 and 28 of each of the upper leg sec- 5 tions I6 is the corresponding lower leg section l8 each of these lower leg sections i8 is provided, at its lower end, with a piercing point, i9. Likewise formed in each of the lower leg sections l8,

adjacent the piercing point iii in the same, are 0 penetration-limiting means in the form of a coil or convolution 20, and these coils or convolutions 20 limit the extent to which the piercing points l9 will penetrate into the wings 2| of a soft collar 22 when the collar stay is in applied or wearing position, as in Fig. 1. I

Likewise formed in each of the lower leg sections I 8 is an offset or U-shaped portion 23 and each of these offset or U-s'haped portions 23 is projected through an opening or slot 24 which is formed in a collar 25, eachof these collars 25 being slidably mounted upon the upper leg section I6 of the corresponding leg l3 and serving to slidably connect the lower leg section l8 of each leg to the upper leg section "5 of the same.

, These collars 25 also function, in a manner which will be described presently, to limit the movementof the upper and lower leg sections l6 and i8, respectively, relative to each other when the same are disposed in extended position (as in Figs. 2and3).

Arranged upon each pair of the upper leg sections 16, between the upper end of the corresponding collar 25 and the coiled end portion I! of the corresponding leg portion 15, is an expansion coil spring 26, and these coil springs 26 normally urge thecollars 25 and the lower leg sections [8, which are attached thereto, at 232l, into extended position (as in Figs. 2 and 3), the lower leg sections [8 being prevented from be- 40 coming detached from the upper leg sections [5 by the engagement of the collars 25 with the bent portions ll of the upper leg sections l6.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such varia-- tions and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

. 1. A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the terminals of the said central portion, said collar stay including legs and each of said legs including an upper leg section and a lower leg section, the upper leg section in each of said legs including substantially parallel portions and one of said parallel portions terminating in the corresponding one of said bends, each of said lower leg sections including a collar slidably mounted upon the'said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, and the upper section of each of said legs including means for preventing detachment of the said lower leg section and collar therefrom. i

2. A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the terminals of the said central portion, said collar stay ineluding legs and each of said legs including an upper leg section and a lower leg section, the upper leg section in each of said legs including substantially parallel portions and one of said parallel portions terminating in the corresponding one of said bends, each of said lower leg sections including a collar slidably mounted upon the said parallel portions oi. the corresponding upper leg section, and the upper section of each of said legs having means for preventing detachment of the said lower leg section and collar therefrom, each of said legs including means for urging the said lower leg section thereof into extended position relative to the upper leg section of the same.

A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the terminals of the said central portion, said collar stay including legs and each of said legs including an upper leg section and a lower leg section, the upper section of each of said legs including substantially parallel portions and one of said secondnamed portions terminating in the corresponding one of said bends, each of said lower leg sections including a collar slidably mounted upon the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, and the upper section of each of said legs having an offset lower end portion for preventing detachment of the said lower leg section and collar therefrom.

A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the terminals of the said central portion, said collar stay including legs and each of said legs including an upper leg section and a lower leg section, the upper section of each of said legs including substantially parallel portions and one of said parallel portions terminating in the corresponding one v of said bends, each of said lower leg sections insaid legs having an ofiset lower end portion for preventing detachment of the said lower leg section and collar therefrom.

A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the terminals of the said central portion, said collar stay including legs and each of said legs including an upper leg section and a lower leg section, the upper leg section in each of said legs including substantially parallel portions and one of said parallel portions terminating in the corresponding one of said bends, each of said lower leg sections including a collar slidably, mounted upon the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg sections, each of said'legs including a spring arranged upon the upper leg section thereof for urging the said lower leg section thereof into extended position relative to the upper leg section of the same, and the upper section of each of said legs including means for preventing detachment of the corresponding lower leg section and collar therefrom.

A collar stay comprising collar engaging means including a cross bar having a central portion, legs at the terminals of said central portion and each including an upper section and a lower section and the upper leg section in each of the said legs including substantially parallel portions having the corresponding lower leg section slidably positioned therebetween, and means slidably connecting the upper and lower leg sections in each of said legs together.

A collar stay comprising collar engaging means including a cross bar having a central portion, legs at the terminals of said central portion and each including an upper section and a lower section and the upper leg section in each of the said legs including substantially parallel portions having the corresponding lower leg section slidably mounted therebetween, means slidably connecting the upper and lower leg sections in each of said legs together, and means for limiting the movement of the lower leg section in each of said legs into extended position, relative to the upper leg section of the same.

8. A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and legs at the terminals of the central portion, each of said legs comprising an upper leg section, including two spaced and substantially parallel portions, and a lower leg section slidably mounted between the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, means for slidably connecting the said leg sections in each of said legs together, and means for limiting the movement of the lower leg section in each of said legs into extended position relative to the upper leg section of the same.

A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and legs at the terminals of the central portion, each of said legs comprising an upper leg section, including two spaced and substantially parallel portions, and a lower leg section slidably mounted between the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, means for slidably connecting the said leg sections in each of said legs together-including a collar attached to the lower leg section and slidably mounted upon the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, and means for limiting the movement or the lower leg sec- 75 tion or each or said legs into extended position relative to the upper leg section of the same.

A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and legs at the terminals of the central portion, each 01 said legs comprising an upper leg section, including two spaced and substantially parallel portions, and a lower leg section slidably mounted between the said parallel portions of the corresponding upper leg section, means for slidably connecting the said leg sections in each of said legs together, the upper leg section or each of said legs having an oflset lower end portion for limiting the movement of the lower leg section of the said leg intoextended position relative to the upper lo. section of the same.

11. A collar stay comprising a cross bar including a central portion and bends at the ends of the central portion, legs at the terminals of the said bends, each of said legs comprising an upper leg section, including two spaced and substantially parallel portions, and a lower leg section slidably mounted between the said parallel portions of the upper leg section, means for slidably connecting the said leg sections of each of said legs together, and means for limiting the movement of the lower leg section of each of said legs into extended position relative to the upper leg section of the same, one of the said parallel portions in the upper le section of each of said legs terminating in and merging into the corresponding one of said bends.
