My invention relates to head coverings o! the hat. type.

Hats are often made 01 light and easily discolorable materials, and when so made present a problem in connection with keeping same clean a.nd neat-looking. My invention is dlrected to the solution of this problem, and has for its prlncipal object the provision of a hat which can be easily and quickly Iaundered and ironed as often as may be desired.

A further object of my invention is the provislon of a hat, the crown of which is made up o1 several sections which can be divided and spread apart.

A Iurther object of my ixivention ls I:o provide a hat with means to divide and spread apart the crown portions thereof to permit each thereot to be easily fiattened for lroning.

Further objects 01 my inventlon will in part be apparent and in part be polnted out specifically herelnbelow in connectlon with the followlng description of an illustrative embodiment.

In conventional hats, the crown portion cousists either of a single piece of material variously puckered to provide the desired curvature sohat the hat will assume the shape of the head when same is put on, or else consists 01 a number of pieces sew6d or otherwise jolned together to get the desired curvature when put an the head. In any event, lt isa matter of some di.fflculty to flatten-the crown so as to be able to iron same eflectively after the hat has been cleaned o1 laundered.

With the hat of my invention the brim is not mac'le as a continuous fing, but is open at least at one point with the ends either spaced apart er overlapping. FurtherT p referably 101m the crown of my hat of two quarter-spherldally shaped portions and unite same by separable fasteners of the zipper type, with the line cf fastening being a continuation of the opening in the brim, so that when the zipper is opened and the components spread apart, the separate portions that make up the crown can be flattened und lroned lndividually. These changes make all the difierence between the ability 't0 iron a. hat well, and the. inability to do so.

Both brim I2 a.nd crown I4 are usually (but not necessarlly) made of the same material, but the brim .is made relatively stifi and self-supporting, as by 5 lines of stitching, starch, or other means (not shown)" while the crown is usually left soft, loose and limp. The materials usually 'emplpyed textile fabrics such as linen, sllk, etc.-are 01 such character that when subjected to washing or cleanlng treatments, same becomes shapeless and crumpled, and generally unsightly and unwearable.

Brim I2 and crown I4 are formed as separate units, and secured together only when the hat Is completed. Brim I2, instead of belng a. continuous completely circular ring, ls split, as ab 24, with the edges, 25, 25, thereof fairly close to one another so that the bri'm does not lpse 1ts character as such. Crown I4 is formed of two sectlons I6. I8, united along a llne extending across the top of the crown from front to back, each of which sectlons is provided with a number qf darts or puckerings adjacent edge 28 thereof, so that same when fllled. out or expanded will take the shape substantially o1 a. quarter-sphere; both together, when united along the longitudinal 1ine trom freut t o back taking the shape substantially 01 a hemisphere. Cooperating Iastening means 50, 52 may be secred, respectively, to crown I4, on e'zach side 01 1 the zipper Iii1e, and to brim I2, on each slde 01 the o pening therein, so that brlm I2 may be 101ded agalnst and securedto the crown, to completely camouflage flap 84 and the zipper line. When in place, as in Fig. 1,.flap 34 completely overlles and hides the zipper line. The flap may be 01 the same material and color as the crown 55 but nee'd not necessarily be so, and while hat two sections, one zipper and flap are shown, three, four or even more: sectlons may be employed with a, corresponding increase of zippers, flaps, etc. The individual sections ofi which the crown 13 Composed are preferably, but not necessarlly quarter spherically shaped. Instead 01 two equally sized and shaped sections, I mayemploy one section cf substantially a. third of a. sphere and the supplementary section a sixth 01 a sphere. The size o'f each section is not lmportant except that their totalit;yupon expansion, take the shape cf a. hemisphere, und the line 01 joining be an extension of the opening in the brim.

The mechanism of my new hat is simple and easy to operabe. After washing and drylng, the catch 32 1s actuated to separate a.nd spread apart portions I6 and I8, am]. the quarterspheres therea.fter flattened and ironed. The portions are then locked together, flap 34 put in platze over the zlpper line, brim I2 fastened against crown M by the snaps 50, 52, and the hat 18 ready for wear again.

Havlng described my invention, what I clalm and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hat comprising a relatively stifi brim with inner und unter sides, and a relatively limp crown comprising a plurality of sections secured to the lnner slde of said brim, separable fastener means to longitudinally and separably divide the crown along a line from the rear thereof adjacent the brim to the front of the crown adjacent the brim, wherebi the crown may be substantially flattened for ironing purposes.

2. A hat as claimed in'claim 1, in'which the brlx'n :ls split in the rear to enable said sections to be separated Irom a. point thereon adjacent s9.id split, and cooperatlng fastening means on the crown and brim whereby the brim may be folded up against said crown in the rear thereof and secured thereto adjacent said split, and in which flap means are provided to overlle and cover the separable fastener means.
