Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
F. HAMILTON, OF CONSHOI-IOCKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED WASHSTAND AND NIGHT-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,428, dated June 1, 1858.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS WV. HAMIL- TON, of Conshohocken, Montgomery county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined l/Vashstand and Night-Stool; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in inclosing a seat within a casing representing the body of an ordinary washstand, with the usual door in front, and in hinging to the back of the said casing, a lid containing a drawer, the whole being arranged, in the manner described hereafter, so as to form an article of bed room furniture, presenting all the appearance and possessing all the convenience of an ordinary washstand, and capable of being readily converted into a night stool for invalids.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification; Figure 1 is a front elevation of my combined washstand and night stool, with the lid down and the door closed. Fig. 2 a sectional elevation on the line 1, 2, Fig. 1, with the lid and door open.
Four upright pieces A, A, A, A, (the lower ends of which form the legs) the back B, he opposite sides C, the front D and seat E form the permanent frame of the apparatus, the seat having the ordinary opening, and being furnished with the usual hinged lip F.
To one of the sides is hinged the door G, the front of which may be paneled or ornamented, so as to represent the front of that class of washstands, which have a cupboard or recess. To the back of the body is hinged the lid H, which is of a boX form, and arranged to receive the drawer I. hen open, the lid rests, at the back, on the hinged bracket a, and whenclosed, projecting lips 2' in front fit into corresponding recesses on the top of the sides C. as well as on the top of the door G, insuch a manner, that the latter cannot be opened until the lid is raised, or the lid closed before the door is shut.
\Yhen a night stool is required as in case of sickness, the lid H, with its drawer I, is raised, the door Gr opened, the lid F raised, and a suitable vessel placed in the opening of the seat E; when the apparatus presents every convenience for the desired purpose. \Vhen not required for the above use, the lids and door are closed; when the apparatus assumes the form, and aflords the usual conveniences of an ordinary washstand.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
The seat E, as inclosed within a body or casing, composed of the back B, the two sides C and the door G, in combination with the lid H and its drawer I, the whole being arranged substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
F. W. HAMILTQN. lVitnesses:
HENRY HowsoN, A. H. CAMPBELL.
