Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,926, dated October` 26, 1858.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS HOFFMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bureau- Bedstead; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which Figure l, is a vertical central section of my improvement in a closed state. Fig. 9., is a vertical section of ditto, in an open state, the plane of section in both figures being longitudinal with the bedstead.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a box of rectangular form and constructed externally to imitate a bureau. The front a, of the box is movable and is secured to the sides b, when the box is closed by means of hooks Z2, and cleats c, the latter being attached to the front edges of the side of the box, see dotted lines Fig. l. The back (Z, and sides b, are permanently secured together and a lid e, is secured by hinges to the upper end of the back, the lid c, orojecting a tritie beyond the top edges of the sides and front a, and when the box is closed, secured down upon the box and to the part a, by a lock.

To the inner side of the front a, of the box, one end of the bed bottom B, is attached, the opposite end being secured in the box A, and at a point a triiie below the end that is attached to a. The bed bottom is formed of three sections g, l1., t', the part g, being permanently secured in the box A, near its lower end, the part i, being permanently secured to the front a. The central part It, is connected by hinges y', 7c, to the parts g, z', the hinges y', allowing the section 71., to fold over on g, and the hinges 7c, allowing the part t', to fold over on h, see Fig. l. The bottom B, is thereby, when folded, made to occupy but a small space in the box A, comparatively a mere triiie, and all the remaining space is reserved for the bed or mattress and necessary bed clothes, shown in red.

The bed or mattress may, like the bed bottom, be constructed in sections corresponding in size to those of the bed-bottom, the sections being detached or connected only by the tick, so that the sections may be readily folded. All the bed clothes may be readily stowed away in the box above the bed bottom, and also readily removed therefrom by raising the lid e.

To the central section h, of the bed bottom, there is attached by a pivot or screw at each side a leg or support Z, which when the bed bottom is extended supports the central section by dropping down and resting on the floor. These supports are turned upward in line with the sides of the section h, when the bottom is folded as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l.

I am aware that bureau bedsteads have been previously constructed, the bottom being so arranged as to fold vertically occupying considerable room within the box and rendering it difficult to place the bed clothes in and remove them from the box, but so far as I am aware none have been devised to fold horizontally and occupy such a small space within the box so that when folded no obstruction will be offered to the space above the bottoni and the open space by means of the lid e, rendered perfectly accessible for the stowing away of the bed or mattress and all necessary bed clothing. I do not claim therefore broadly and irrespective of construction, a folding bed bottom in connection with a box so that the former when the device is not in use, may be folded within the latter, and when designed for use withdrawn from it; but,

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as an improved article of manufacture:

A bureau-bedstead in which the bed bottom B is hinged so as to fold and expand horizontally, when opened or closed, as herein shown and described.
