Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONI ISKE, 0F LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUPBOARD AND SINK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,493, dated August 7, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONI IsKE, of the city of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improvement in Kitchen Furniture, which Consists of a Combined Sink and Kitchen-Cupboard; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows the cupboard, with the sink concealed except the front edges A1, A2, and B; Fig. 2 the same, with the cup-board doors open, and the sink drawn out and hinged side pieces laid back. Fig. 3 shows the back ledge or stay ledge H of the same, with the dish-pan removed. The drawing clearly illustrates its operation.
The central board B, Fig. 2, has an oblong oval opening f for the reception of a tin or zinc flanged pan F. This may be provided with a ledge L, in front and draining grooves C to carry the drainage into the pan; to each end are hinged wings A1 and A2. These wings may be laid down level with the center board, or inclined upward at the ends, with strips of zinc or tin overlapping the joints on the sides of the hinges, tacked to the wings. The play of the hinge joints will not prevent said strips (Sulliciently wide to cover the joints) from being turned under in closing up the wings. The closet doors opened at right angles to the sides form supports for the lid B, of the sink. The wings are folded on to the center table B, and together thrust in under the drawers as shown in Fig. 1. The closet beneath has a shelf D, with a segment of a i circle cut out, to enable a more ready access to water kept on the lower shelf in the cool. The drawers, &c., are after the ordinary fashion. It is designed to set a cupboard on top of the closet, in the manner such kitchen cupboards are usually made, to be lifted on or 01T as circumstances may require.
The object of this combination is to economize space in our usually small kitchens, so that two indispensable articles of furniture occupy the space only of one. Besides its tidy appearance and the facility with which it can be drawn out and thrust out of sight, makes it a combination highly desirable.
I am aware that there is no novelty in the closet or cupboard part, nor in the table with its hinged wings, independently considered; but I am not aware that any such useful combinations of the two has been ever made before.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination and arrangement of the sliding sink board B, and the hinged wings A when attached to a cupboard or closet substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ANTHONI ISKE. Witnesses:
S. G. MUssER, JACOB STAUFFER.
