Patented .NO v. 14, 1876.
ATTBBHEYS. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OLAUS HANSEN, OF CEDAR VALE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,375, dated November 14, 1876; application filed l August 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
spondin g parts.
The invention relates to improvements in desks, wardrobes, cabinets, book-cases, cupboards, and similar articles of furniture that stand out from the wall, so that the doors, instead of projecting into the room and occupying space, may be folded and swung out of the way along the side of the furniture.
The invention consists in constructing a desk, wardrobe, book-case, or analogous article of household furniture, with end recesses and corner-posts, to which latter `the doors are so connected as to swing around them into the recesses, the posts constituting ornamental corner-projections of the desk or wardrobe, &c., whether the doors be open or closed.
In the drawing, Arepresents a desk, or similar article of furniture, standing out from the wall, and B the doors of the same, which are hung, by top and bottom bands or hinges C, to dowelpins D, at the center of a fixed cornercolumn E, as shown on one side of the desk in Figs. 1, 3, and 5; or the column may be made part of the door, and attached, by top and bottom bands C, to strong center-pins D at the corner `of the desk, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
In one case the door is so fitted to the stationary column as' to swing around the same'. In the other case the column turns with the door when opening the same.
A recess, B', of suitable width, at the sides or ends of the desk A, serves to take up and store the doors B after the same are swung entirely around.
The swinging leaf F, that forms the desk when opened, is hinged in, the same as the doors, by end straps and dowel-pins, being thus connected to the desk with greater durability and strength than by the common hinge-connection.
The doors are folded when opened, and swung around into the end recesses, being thus entirely out of the way when the desk, book-case, or other article is used. The doors are thereby not in the way, occupy no space, and may be readily closed again after use, as the hinge-construction is strong, and admits the easy and convenient handling of the doors.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A vertical desk, wardrobe, or other analogous article of household furniture, having the end recesses and corner posts, as described, and folding doors connected with the latter by liat hinges G, whereby the said doors are adapted to swing around the posts 'and lie concealed in the recesses behind them, as shown and set forth.
