Description

March 17, 1936. F. w. LAENCHER 2,034,659
PRICE TAG Filed April :5, 1934 Patented Mar. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PRICE TAG Application April 3, 1934, Serial No. 718,748
3 Claims.
This invention relates to price tags for merchandise, and particularly to tags of the class illustrated in my prior Patent No. 1,854,149, dated April 12, 1932, in which the tag is secured to merchandise without the use of metallic fastening devices.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved tag of the type disclosed in said prior patent.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is an end elevation.
Figure 2 is a plan view showing the back of the tag.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 5, and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 6.
Figures 5 and 6 are plan views showing the back and front, respectively, of the tag as applied to a piece of merchandise, Figure 5 showing the merchandise inserted before pushing the tab through, and Figure 6 showing the tab pushed through to secure the tag thereto.
The price tag I is preferably formed of rela tively stifi paper or cardboard cut to the desired shape and size. If desired, thesaid tags may be made in strips for convenience in feeding to a tag marking machine.
For purposes of attaching the price tag to the goods, a tab 2 is provided, which, as illustrated, lies entirely within the marginal edge of the tag.
The said tab is formed by cutting the tag stock, preferably in such manner that the edges 3 and 4 35 are spaced from the adjacent edges 5 and 6 of the tag body so as to provide slots or spaces I for the reception of the goods to be tagged. The
edge 8, as cut, may abut the edge 9 of the tag body or may be slightly spaced therefrom, de- 40 pending upon the shape of the cutting dies. Subsequent to cutting out the tab 2, transverse grooves H] are formed in the tag body opposite the tab 2, and these grooves serve to shorten the tag body somewhat, with the result that the edge 8 of the tab is caused to overlap the edge 9 of the tag body slightly.
If desired, the tab may also be provided with a groove II extending longitudinally thereof and serving to stiffen the tab.
When the tag is made the tab is arranged as illustrated in Figure 2 with the lower edge of the tab engaging the rear face of the tag body and ready for the insertion of the merchandise as illustrated in Figures 3 and 5. After insertion of the merchandise, the tab is pushed through the aperture in the tag body as illustrated in Figures 4 and 6 so that the lower edge of the tab engages the front face of the tag body. Although the flexibility of the tag is suflicient to permit the tab to be pushed through the aperture, the construction is such as to provide substantial resistance to movement of the tab through the plane of the tag body, thus preventing the accidental removal of the tag from the goods, for pulling on the goods merely wedges the tab more tightly against the tag body. In order to remove the tag, the tab must be pushed back through the aperture.
It will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A price tag having a tab formed therein entirely within the marginal edge of the tag, said tab being spaced from the body of the tag along two symmetrically disposed portions of its periphery, the body of the tag opposite said tab being shortened by bending, so that the tab overlaps the body of the tag along the remainder of its periphery.
2. A price tag having a tab formed therein entirely within the marginal edge of the tag, said tab being spaced from the body of the tag along two symmetrically disposed portions of its periphery, the tag body being provided with transverse grooves opposite said tab which shorten the tag body causing one edge ofthe tab to overlap the adjacent opposed edge of the tag body.
3. A price tag having an integral tab formed therein entirely within the marginal edge of the tag, the tag body being provided with transverse grooves opposite said tab which shorten the tag body causing one edge of the tab to overlap the adjacent opposed edge of the tag body.
