PUANT IDENTIFYING MARKER Filed J uly'17, 1935 Fig.6-
' Iph/ENTUR;
Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to plant identifying markers for use in gardens and its object is to provide a marker comprising a post or support member provided with novel label-attaching means that securely hold a label against displacement and permit the ready removal and reinsertion of the same at will.
My invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a vertical elevation of a plant identifying marker embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevation partly in section of a modification.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of a further modification.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 1-? of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 is a plan View of the label.
In the particular drawing selected for more fully disclosing my invention, it] is a post or support member consisting of a fiat metal strip having a central longitudinal rib ll terminating a short distance from the upper end of the member, such distance being equal approximately to the width of the label it, which may be of cardboard, fibre, or other suitable material. By cutting away the upper portion of the rib, a space is provided for receiving the label, which in each of the forms of my invention is secured between two longitudinally spaced tongues integral with the support member.
In the form shown in Fig. 1, the lower tongue I! is formed by removing a short length of the base portion of the rib, leaving an overhang, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper tongue M is formed by bending the upper end of the strip 10 back on itself.
The two horizontal edges of the label are provided, respectively, with oppositely disposed indentations I5, IQ, for receiving the tongues aforesaid, whereby said label is securely held against displacement.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, the
upper end of the tube 20 is flattened, thereby forming two parallel plates 2!, 2| equal in length approximately to the width of the label. The lower tongue 22 is struck out of the plate 2| by a suitable punch inserted through the opening 5 23 in the plate 2|. The upper tongue 24 is formed by bending the end of the plate 2| back on itself.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the post or standard is a flat metallic strip 30 provided, as 10 in the case of the other two embodiments of my invention, with two longitudinally spaced tongues 3 l, 32, the tongue 3| being formed by bending the upper end of the strip back on itself, and the tongue 32 being formed from the strip by a striking-up punch.
In each of the embodiments of my invention the label preferably is formed with the indentations l 5, i 5, for receiving the longitudinally spaced tongues, however, the latter may be formed.
The label is readily inserted between the tongues by bending it longitudinally and placing one of the edges thereof against the support with its indentations under one of the tongues, and the other edge against the support immediately forward of the other tongue and then upon releasing it, the elasticity of the label will cause it to snap into position and be firmly held against displacement. Obviously by bending the label so as to bring one or both of the indentations out of engagement with the tongues, said label may readily be removed from a given post in case it is desired to change labels, instead of going to the expense of using a different post.
Having thus described illustrative embodiments 5 of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A plant identifying marker comprising a flat supporting member having a central longitudinal rib terminating short of the upper end thereof to afiord a space for receiving a label, the base portion of said rib being removed near the upper end thereof to form a label-engaging tongue, a tongue integral with said support member at the upper end thereof, and a label secured between said tongues, said label having two oppositely disposed indentations for receiving said tongues.
HENRY U. HOLZER.
