Description

F. J. KERNAN April 6, 1937.
TAG
Filed July 10, 195e IVE ATTOR N EY Patented Apr. 6, 1937 UNTED STATES MMM PATENT? cerise 6 Claims.
This invention relates to tags and more particularly to tags of the type popularly attached to articles, such for instance as jewelry for the purpose of marking prices, styles, etc.
An object of my invention is to provide a tag of the character described which is provided with integral means for positively and removably securing the tag to the article without in any way injuring the article to which the tag is attached.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tag of the character described adapted for use with equal ecacy for articles of various sizes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tag comprising a pair of connected panels, one
" of the panels having a pair of short tabs and an elongated linger intermediate the tabs, whereby, when the nger is looped over an article and is inserted between the folded panels, the short tabs may be clinched over the panel to close the tag.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which all of the views are on an enlarged scale, and wherein:
Fig. l is a top plan view of the blank of my improved tag,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my tag showing the manner in which it is secured to an article,
Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the tag closed,
Fig. 4 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on lines 4 5 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawing, my improved tag 5 is preferably made from a blank of suitable material, such as thin pliable metal or the like, and comprises essentially a body notched intermediate its length in its side edges and adapted to be folded transversely across from one notch to the other, upon itself to provide the panels 6, 6 which are preferably of similar configuration and have a connecting portion l. The panel 6 is provided, at its outer extremity, with a pair of short, preferably integral tabs 8 and 9, and with an elongated finger i!) therebetween, the finger l0 terminating in an enlarged head Il.
In applying my device to an article of jewelry such as the ring i 2, the nger I0 of panel 6 is looped over the article and then downwardly against the panel 6; the panel 6 is bent upwardly over the enlarged head Il of finger l0, parallel to the panel 6. The short tabs 8 and 9 of panel 6 are clinched over panel E', thus effectively closing the tag (see Fig. 3).
'I'he short tabs 8 and 9 are preferably, as shown in Fig. l, extending divergently so that when the tabs are clinched over the panel 6', the tabs will overlie the panel just beyond the lines of the enlarged head il of the finger l0 which is held between the panels, thus effectively closing the tag.
The tag may be made in a standard size for use with equal eilicacy in connection with articles of various cross sections, due to the arrangement described, that is, looping the finger l0 over the article and then clinching the enlarged head I l of the finger Iii between the panels 6 and 6 by means of the tabs 8 and 9.
My improved tag is secured to the article without the use of any adhesive material and without in any way marring or damaging the article. In order to remove the tag from the article it is merely necessary to raise the tabs 8 and 9 and then the finger l0 may be withdrawn from the panels 6 6.
The panels 6, 6 may be embossed or provided with scribable surfaces of any desired form, and may be made not only in the configuration shown in the drawing but of any other desired or convenient prole. The panels may also be provided with any desired insignia or markings'.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modications without departing from the general scope herein noted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A tag comprising a pair of panels, one of said panels provided with an elongated finger extending from the edge opposite the other panel, and a tab spaced adjacent each side of said nger, said tabs adapted to bind the other panel when said nger is folded upon itself to extend between the panels when the tag is closely folded.
2. A tag comprising a pair of integrally united panels, one of said panels provided on its edge opposed to the other panel with a finger having an enlarged head, and a pair of tabs extending in spaced relation to said linger adapted to bind the panels when folded and clinch said head when folded intermediate the panels.
3. A tag comprising a pair of connected panels notched at their line of demarcation, an elonindicated and de- U gated finger extending from the free edge of one of said panels opposed to the other panel, an enlarged head on said finger, a tab spaced adjacent each side of said finger, said tabs adapted to bind the panels when the tag is folded in the plane of its edge notches and clinch the finger head between said panels when folded therebetween.
4. A tag comprising a pair of integrally conneoted panels, a linger extending from the edge of one of said panels opposite the other panel, said nger having an enlarged head, a tab at each side of said finger in position to abut the head when positioned between the panels, said tabs being divergently inclined and adapted to retain said panels in juxtaposition when folded thereover.
5. A tag comprising a body adapted to be folded upon itself to provide a pair of substantially equal panels, said body provided at one end edge with a finger having an enlarged terminal and a. pair of tabs one at each side of the finger, said tabs adapted to clamp the nger terminal intermediate the panels when the body is folded along its median line and the finger folded therebetween.
6. A tag comprising a body notched intermediate its length in its opposite side edges and adapted to be folded upon itself to provide a pair of panels, one end of said panels being provided with a pair of divergently inclined spaced tabs and an elongated finger therebetween, said tabs adapted to clinch the nger between the panels when the tag is folded transversely from notch to notch and the finger folded to enter between the panels.
