Description

Jan. 22, 1935. 1. ANDREWS 1,988,977
LOOM REED Filed Dec. 2, 1933 m -PJ 45 Jaac flndrewa 0 attorneys,
Patented Jan. 22, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOOM REED Isaac Andrews, Spartanburg, S. 0.
Application December 2, 1933, Serial No. 700,743
8 Claims. (Cl. 139-192) This invention has reference to loom reeds, the primary object of the invention being to provide a loom reed, of the general construction as shown in my Patent No. 1,886,778, issued November 8, 1932, and having sectional backing strips, which may be readily and easily removed, whereby ready access may be had to the dents, to permit the reed to be repaired with facility.
An important object of the invention is the provision of means for securing the backing strips, in such a way that the backing strips will be se curely held in position against displacement laterally of the loom reed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven-- tion.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmental elevational view of a loom reed constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion of the backing strip being broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of a backing strip, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the loom reed, which is indicated generally by the reference character 5, is of the usual and well known construction, except for the removable backing strips, forming the subject matter of this invention.
As shown, the loom reed comprises side bars 6, between which the dents 7 are positioned, the dents being separated at their ends, by means of the cotton binding 8, whereby the dents are cushioned at their ends.
The outer extremities of the dents are of course secured together by solder, and the backing strips, forming the subject matter of this invention, have their rear surfaces so constructed that they fit over the ends of the dents, and conform to the shape of the ends of the dents and securing means, as clearly shownby the drawing.
The backing strips include sections 9 and 10 of like construction, the sections being of lengths equal to the widths of the reedswith which they are used, the ends of the strips being tapered so that the caps 11 may be positioned thereon, where they are secured as by means of the securing nails 12;
Grooves 13 are formed in the backing strip sections, and are disposed intermediate the ends thereof, the grooves being of widths to accommodate the clips 14, which are constructed of spring metal material, and formed in such a way that the clips will spread when positioned, but will securely grip the sections of the backing strip, holding the sections into close engagement with the upper and lower edges of the reed.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to this construction, the clips may be readily and easily removed, the construction of the clips being such that oifset portions 15 are provided, under which a suitable tool may be positioned to force the clips from the backing strips.
After the backing strips have been removed, the ends of the dents are exposed so that ready access may be had to the ends of the dents, to permit the reed to be repaired with facility, and eliminating the necessity of disfiguring or breaking the backing strips by removing rivets, which is necessary in removing the backing strips of loom reeds now in common use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A loom reed comprising dents, sectional backing strips positioned over the ends of the dents, spring clips curved to conform to the shape of the backing strips and adapted to grip the backing strips holding the backing strips into engagement with the ends of the dents, and the free ends of the spring clips being spaced appreciable distances from the dents whereby the clips may be expanded and removed.
2. A loom reed comprising dents, sectional backing strips positioned over the ends of the dents, spring clips positioned over the backing strips holding the backing strips into engagement with the ends of the dents, said clips having offset portions for the reception of an instrument whereby the clips may be raised vertically from the backing strips, releasing the backing strips.
3. A loom reed comprising dents, sectional backing strips positioned over the ends of the dents, said backing strips having grooves, narrow spring clips, fitted in the grooves, and said clips having offset portions adapted to receive an instrument, whereby the clips may be forced vertically from the backing strips, releasing the backing strips.
