N-PETERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAFNER. WAQHINGTUNL'D (l .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. LAWTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,558, dated April 16, 1878; application file February 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. LAWTON, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to an improved manner of attaching shirt-bos0ms to shirts, so as to prevent the cloth at the edge of the bosom from being worn out by friction, and at the same time not mar the appearance of the shirt.
It consists in a novel manner of stitching the two or more thicknesses of the bosom-lining and the outer linen of the bosom front to the shirt, in order to form an edge of less stitfness than the main portion of the bosom, and
at the same time be stiff enough to protect the thick rigid edge of the part where the lining terminates.
Shirt-bosoms are ordinarily composed of three or more layers of linen, or linen and cotton cloth, and have the entire parts which extend along the edges sewed fast to the main shirt-front, making the seam of the same thickness and stiffness as the body of the bosom. Such uniform thickness of bosom and its edges or seams prevents a conformity of the shirt to the form of the wearer, thus making an ill-fitting garment, which, when thoroughly starched, breaks and wears out readily at the edge of the bosom.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front View.
A is the main shirt, having the bosom 13 made of several thicknesses, and with as many folds, plaits, welt-s, or cords as may be desired. I cut the inside stiifenin g or lining pieces smaller than the outside linen of the bosom, so that the outside linen will extend over, and project about half an inch beyond, the edges of the lining. I then stitch the lining to the shirt-front, where it has been cut out the exact size to, fit the lining. I then carry the linen bosom over the edge of this lining, and stitch it to the main shirt-front, thus forming a Welt or stiffening-piece, which is covered by the flap or overlapping extension D of the outside front of the bosom B. This gives a smooth outside appearance to the bosom, while at the same time forming a thin and pliable joint around the entire edge without destroying the proper stiffness of the bosom, but permitting it.to fit the wearer in a neat and comfortable manner, and without wearing out or breaking the cloth at the edges of the bosom by friction against the outer clothing, or any other cause.
I am aware that a separate strip has been sewed on the outer edge of the shirt-bosom, as a re-enforce to prevent it from wearing out; but this gives the shirt abad appearance, and usually spoils the fit of the shirt. This, there fore. I do not claim; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
The improvement in the manufacture of shirts whichconsists in cutting the lining of the bosom shorter than the outside linen, and in carrying the linen over the edge of the lining and stitching it to the shirt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
W. D. LAWTON. [L- s.]
