Patented NPETERS, PHOTo-LlTHuGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
DAvID J. H. DAvIEs,
OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 202,243, dated April 9, 1878; application filed August 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. H. DAvIEs, of Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my steam washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of asteam washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the boiler, of any ordinary shape and size. At each end of the boiler is formed a chamber, B, open at its lower end, closed at the top, and near the top on the inner side provided with perforations c a, for.
the passage of hot water and steam. On the bottom of the boiler A is placed a false bottom, C, having downward projecting side flanges b b, which form the supports for said false bottom. From thev center of the false bottom extends a vertical tube, D, the lower port-ion of which is surrounded by a cone, DI, and the upper end provided with a cap, D2.
The cone Dl is solid, while the tube D is perforated both within and above the cone.
The false bottom C is also perforated with holes, of varying sizes, from end to end, and also within the cone D. Under the bottom C is an auxiliary bottom, C', arranged to form two side passages, G G, and one central pas' sage, G.
The side passages G G are closed at the bottom, but open at the ends, while the central passage G is open at the bottom also.
The perforations in the false bottom C -are so arranged as to open into the side passages G, but not into the center passage G. From this center passage there is, however, one single opening, d, into the center tube D, as shown.
The false bottom C, with attachments as described, is held in the boiler by one end being placed under a flange, i, on one of the chambers B, and the other end fastened by a pivoted'button, h, on the opposite chamber.
The soap is to be cut up in small pieces, and placed on the bottom of the boiler, the water poured in, and the clothes placed or laid on the false bottom C, and when the water boils the steam and suds rise through the chambers B, and are discharged on top of the clothes. In like manner it passes into the cone D', thence into the tube D, and out from the tube onto the clothes.
The peculiar'arrangement of the bottoms C C', tube D, and cone Dl with the perforations, as described, gives a violent agitation to the suds and steam, so that they will penetrate the fibers of the fabric, and ,speedily cleanse the same.
I is the lid of the boiler, formed with a steamdome, J, in which is placed a sliding cap, L, having perforations x, which act as a safetyvalve for the escape of steam by the cap rising to uncover the perforations with any excess of steam, while it falls again when the steampressure falls.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a wash-boiler, the false bottom C, auxiliary bottom C', forming passages G G and G', center tube D, and cone DI, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID J. H. DAVIES. Witnesses:
RoscIUs W. J UDsoN, FRANK R. J UDsoN.
