Description

G. HOFFMANN.
WASH-BOILER.
Patented Feb. 15, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
" GEORGE HOFFMANN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT m WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l73,468, dated February 15,1876; application filed November 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HOFFMANN, of Cleveland, Guyahoga county, in the State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Wash Boiler or Steamer, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof:
My invention consists in a wash boiler or steamer, constructed with a double wall and supplementary or false bottom, the interior wall and said false bottom being perforated,
as hereinafter set forth, together with a flat-- cover removed.
'The boiler is constructed with the double walls a and a, and the supplementary or false bottom b, as shown. The wall a, is the exterior wall of the boiler, and the wall a is the interior wall, which latter, together with the false bottom b, is perforated throughout its surfacial extent, as shown; The bottom b is elevated somewhat above the true boiler bottom B, as shown, and extends only to the inierior walla on all sides. The perforations in the wall at below the line of the bottom b,
are, preferably, considerably larger than the other perforations in said wall, as seen in Fig.
l. O is a flattened hollow cone, projecting upward through the bottom b, nearly to the'top of the boiler, as shown, and extending across the boiler longitudinally nearly its whole length, closed at its top, and with its walls perforated throughout their snrfacial extent, as shown in Fig. 1.
I prefer to construct the interior wall a, bottom b, and cone 0 in one part, forming a chamber, D, with perforated walls and bottom, while the walls a, being extended down below the bottom b as a standard, the chamber D being set within the boiler proper E,
formed by the exterior walla and true bottom B, a space or chamber, D, will be formed between the bottom band true bottom B, and Y' a flange, c, projecting from the rim or top of the walla, outwardly to the wall a, in which hanends with catchesf, one on each end, by which it may be hooked or caught upon the handles g of the boiler, as seen in Fig. 1.
The operation of my boiler is as follows: Water, mingled with the proper quantity of soap, is placed in the boiler E until it about fillsthe space D bet-weenthe bottoms B and b. The wash is then placed in the chamber D, and the boiler-cover is secured in place by the spring-bar F. The water, saturated with soap contained in the space D, is then boiled, and the steam then generated circulates through the wash, penetrating the chamber D through the perforations in the Walls a and bottom b, and the walls of the cone 0, and the wash is thus rapidly and readily cleansed.
The bar F acts to retain the cover G in place under the low pressure of the steam, and the steam is thus prevented from escape, while it is more readily generated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wash-steamer having the interior perforated wall a, and the perforated supplementary bottom 0, forming the chambers D and D, together with the flattened, hollow, and perforated cone (7, the cover G, and springbar F, as described, and for the purpose specified.
7 GEORGE HOFFMANN.
