Description

, UNITED *STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. RUSSELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,914, dated September 8, 1874; application filed July 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. RUssELL,
. of Brooklyn,'in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boilers, of
which the following is a specification:
This inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the plane as m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to wash-boilers in i which the clothes are supported by a screen withinthe boiler, said boiler being provided with a perforated false bottom, whereby the clothes are cleansed by the directaction of the steam.
above each of which is a short tube or nipple,
E, and above the nipples is a screen, F, which is removable, being made to rest on the nipples, or aflixed in theboiler in any other suitable manner. The screen F forms the support for the clothes in the boiler, serving to isolate the same from the false bottom, by the nipples of which they might become torn if allowed to come in immediate contact therewith. The said screen F is constructed of j wire or of perforated sheet metal, as seen fit. The false bottom is at such a distance above the bottom B of the boiler as to leave a space beneath it and above the water-level for the generation of steam. The steam generating or forming in this space passes through the perforations b, and is conducted up through their nipples, from which it emerges with such force. as to penetrate every piece and portion of the clothes in the boiler, so as to loosen the fiber and soften the dirt, whereby, whenclined, and when the steam strikes or collects upon it, it rapidly condenses, by reason of the cool state of the lid, and, trickling down to or upon the inner side of the boiler, it finds its way to the water-space beneath the false bottom.
The screen or condenser Gabove mentioned is constructed of wire, or of perforated sheet metal, and it is detachable from the lid, in like manner as the lid from the boiler, being placed in or left out from the lid, as the condition of the steam may dictate.
The lid is provided with a safety-valve, H, which rests on the top of a chamber, I,'for1ned on the apex of the boiler, in 'such a manner that when the pressure of the steam in the boiler becomes too great the valve is raised off of its seat automatically, and the superfluous steam is let 011'.
The valve-chamber is provided with a perforated bottom, and to it is connected a conductor, J, the purpose of which is to receive the condensed steam from the valve-chamber and conduct it to the side of the lid, or of the boiler, whence, together with the'remaining products of condensation, it returns to the steam or water space beneath the false bottom.
By these means no water is allowed to drip upon or come in contact with the clothes, the dirt and grease being loosened entirely by steam, whereby the process of washing can be accomplished with great ease and facility.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the wash-boiler A, of the false bottom D, constructed with the perforations b, havingabove each perforation boiler, the whole, being constructed and com- ,a vertical nipple or tube, E, and with the bined substantiallyas herein shown and declothes-supporting screen F, adapted to be scribed. T supported by the vertical nipples above the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I false bottom, as herein shown and described. have hereunto set my hand and seal.
2. The inclined lid (J, provided with the valve-chamber I, having a perforated bottom, WILLIAM RUSSELL and constructed with the inclined conductor Witnesses: J for conducting the condensed steam in the W. HAUFF,
valve-chamber to the side of the lid of the E. F. KASTENHUBER.
