MARIE GLASS, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISCONSIN. u
'ST'EAM'WASHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,531, dated November 17, 1903. Application filed February 28, 1903. Serial No. 145,505. (No model.)
zen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Attachments for Washboilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 7
My invention relates to a device to be used in a washboiler for the purpose of cleansing clothes by steam and hot water; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings,Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of my said device in operative position in awashboileiytaken on the plane indicated by the line 1 1 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the said device with the cover removed.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates a washboiler of ordinary construction, having a tight-fitting cover. 2 represents a flat perforated metallic plate provided with feet 3 3, so as to be supported upon and ing a central opening covered by a convex dome4, tightly secured to said plate and open at its upperend, from which there rises a cylindrical close-Walled steam-pipe 5, Whose upper end is formed with exterior screw-threads, as shown at 6. v
The open upper end of the pipe 5 is closed by the steam-distributor, consisting of a cylindrical cap 7, with closed top and open bottom, the latter being formed with screwthreads 8, so that the said cap may be quickly and tightly screwed to place upon the pipe 5 bythe engagement of the screw-threads 6 and 8, the said cap being provided with a series of distributing-pipes, preferably six in number, the two pipes 9 9 being of greater length than the four intermediate pipes 10 10, all of said pipes extending downward, as shown, and terminating in flattened and perforated end pieces 11 11.
The operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. When the parts have been assembled as described, the device is put within a Washboiler, so that the plate 2 forms a partial false bottom, and the space below the same is filled with soapy water; The clothes to be cleaned are thoroughly soaked and then wrapped or wound around the pipe 5, the plate 2 keeping them above the water in the bottom of the boiler, which latter is placed upon the stove withthe cover of the boiler in place and with a fire hot enough to quickly convert the water into steam. The steam is gathered within the dome, 4 and ascends the pipe 5 to the distributer-cap 7, whose closed top deflects the steam downward through the described pipes 9 10 and their end perforations upon and through the clothes. As the steam condenses and escapes through the clothes down to the bottom of the boiler in the form of water it is again converted into steam and again forced up and through the clothes, thereby circulating in this manner repeatedly, and each time forcing dirt out of the clothes until they are clean. The tight cover of the boiler guards against any escape of steam into the room,
thus adding to the comfort of the user, and when the clothes are clean and ready to be removed the cover is first taken off the boiler and then the cap 7 is unscrewedand the clothes pulled upward off the pipe 5. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. In an attachment for washboilers, the combination with a perforated flat horizontal plate provided with legs and having a central opening, of a central steam-gathering convex dome, having an open upper end, a cylindrical close-walled steam-pipe rising from said dome, and the upper end of said pipe being screw-threaded a closed-top cap formed with screw-threads at its lower cylindrical end for engagement with the threads on said steam-pipe, and a series of pipes of difierent lengths projecting downwardly from said cap, and terminating in flattened perforated end pieces.
2. The combination with a washboiler of greater length than width, and a close-fitting cover, of a flat horizontal perforated plate of correspondingly greater length than Width, formed with a central opening, and having downward-extendinglegs to rest on the boilerbottom, and a convex steam-gathering opentopped dome rising from the edge wall of the said central opening, but otherwise free from any projections or attachments, in combination with a cylindrical close-walled steampipe, rising from the said dome, and open at each end; a steam-distributer comprising a closed-top and open-bottom cap, of same diameter as that of the said steam-pipe and removably secured to the top thereof, and provided with a series of downwardly-projecting pipes, two of which are of greater length than the others and extend toward the ends of the boiler, while the shorter intermediate pipes project radially toward the sides of the boiler, and all of said pipes terminating in flattened reduced ends, closed save forseries of perforations therethrough.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
MARIE GLASS.
